ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? Some people like company. Others prefer to be alone. The same holds true for the particles that constitute the matter around us: Some, called bosons, like to act in unison with others. Others, called fermions, have a mind of their own.

Different as they are, both species can show "collective" behavior -- an effect similar to the wave at a baseball game, where all spectators carry out the same motion regardless of whether they like each other.

Scientists generally believed that such collective behavior, while commonplace for bosons, only appeared in fermions moving in unison at very long wavelengths. Now, however, collective behavior has been discovered at short wavelengths in one Fermi system, helium-3.

A team led by Professor Eckhard Krotscheck -- a physicist who recently joined the University at Buffalo from the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria -- predicted the existence of the behavior using theoretical tools. Independently, but practically at the same time, a French team observed the collective behavior.

A paper detailing both the theoretical and experimental discoveries appeared in the journal Nature on March 29.

Krotscheck said the scientists' success in developing accurate theoretical predictions lay, in part, in the fact that they focused on mathematical tools instead of trying to reproduce experiments.

"Knowing how nature ticks at a microscopic scale, we set out to develop a robust theory that was capable of dealing with a wide range of situations and systems," Krotscheck said. "We demanded that our mathematical description is accurate for both fermions and bosons, in different dimensions, and for both coherent and incoherent excitations. Only after we were done, we looked at experiments."

Krotscheck's colleagues on the study include Henri Godfrin, Matthias Meschke and Ahmad Sultan of the Institut Néel, CNRS, and Université Joseph Fourier in France; Hans-Jochen Lauter of the Institut Laue-Langevin in France and Oak Ridge National Laboratory; and Helga Bohm and Martin Panholzer of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Johannes Kepler University in Austria. Meschke also belongs to the Low Temperature Laboratory of Aalto University in Finland.

Gay Marriage Watch ? Blog Archive ? Finding the Perfect Wedding ...

Couples commonly choose wedding photographers who are members of their community and share in their culture because that photographer would have a better understanding of the rituals and relationships. Does that concept extend to gay and lesbian couples searching for a wedding photographer?

In an effort to answer that question, let me share a story with you.

A Not Terribly Challenging Challenge

Not long ago I was at a seminar for wedding photographers. One speaker billed himself as an expert in posing, and he challenged the audience to come up with their most difficult posing predicament. He said he couldn?t be stumped.

So, of course, I wanted to stump him.

I noticed that all his sample poses were with straight couples. This happens all the time at wedding seminars and, as a gay man, it drives me crazy. You?d think same sex couples didn?t exist. While I have experience working with same sex couples, I was curious how he would handle that challenge, so I raised my hand and asked ?how would you pose two men??

His response ?Are they brothers??

?No.?

?Are they father and son??

?No.?

?Then why are they posing??

?Because they?re getting married. (long pause) To each other. (long pause). You know ? a gay couple.?

?Ohhh!?

Much to his credit, he did not shy away from the challenge, although it was clear he had never even considered the possibility before. At this point he brought me on stage and paired me up with another man to do his posing demonstration.

And then he says ??.

?OK, so which one of you is the passive one??

After about 10 seconds of stunned silence, I managed to pick my jaw up off the floor and tried to explain that unlike a straight couple where the bride is traditionally the center of attention, when you have two grooms or two brides, there is a more equal focus on both people. Hence the challenge for someone who only works with straight couples.

The Pose

So he posed us. One of us on a chair leaning forward and one of us standing behind. Both of us with shoulders parallel to the camera so we would look ?more masculine? (his words, not mine).

We looked like cousins. Distant cousins. Distant feuding cousins.

Later in the seminar he brought on a straight couple and did a posing session where he had them kissing and hugging and nuzzling each other?s necks.

The difference was startling.

Shooting What You Know

I tell this story not to disparage any other wedding photographers. There are many wonderful and talented photographers of every orientation who have worked with same sex couples and will do a great job. But at the same time, there are many photographers who are squeamish or just confused about how to portray affection between same sex couples, and really don?t understand the dynamic between two men or two women.

Much like a good writer writes what they know, a good photographer shoots what they know. Our entire lives, we have been exposed via popular culture to straight images of love, romance and passion. Even with the strides the LGBT community has made recently, the gay and lesbian couples we see in popular culture are comparatively sexless. This is why gay photographers have no problem with portraying straight couples. Straight photographers, however, can sometimes encounter problems shooting gay couples because they just haven?t been exposed to it.

Five Tips for Choosing a Wedding Photographer for same sex couples.

• 1.?Look for LGBT images.??Be sure that the photographer has images of gay and lesbian couples in their portfolio. No matter how gorgeous their pictures might be, if there are no images of same sex couples, then you have no idea of their comfort or competence level. You don?t want to be asked on your wedding day, ?Which one of you is the passive one?? Especially in front of your parents.
• 2. Verify their commitment.?There are a lot of terrific photographers out there who haven?t had the chance to shoot a same sex ceremony, so if the photographer you?re looking at doesn?t have any same sex wedding images, and you really like their work, ask if they have any gay or lesbian couples portraits. If they?re really committed to reaching out to the LGBT community then they will have gone to the trouble of setting up some same- sex couples shoots to expand their portfolio.
• 3. See if they ?walk the walk? of marriage equality.? If a photographer has shots of gay and lesbian couples, but doesn?t put them on their website, or has a separate website for those images, you might want to take that into account. Separate is never equal in my opinion.
• 4.?Avoid suprises.?Avoid any situation where you meet your photographer on your wedding day, such as wedding photography companies with multiple shooters, or a venue that requires you to use their staff photographer. If you have a situation where you can?t meet or communicate with your photographer until the day of the wedding, then you?re playing with fire.
• 5.?Consider community culture.? If you?ve narrowed your choices down to a straight and a gay photographer and they?re equal on quality and price, then I would suggest you lean towards the gay photographer. As I mentioned, couples commonly hire photographers who are members of their community and share their culture. A gay photographer will probably be better able to record not only your relationship with each other, but also with your family and friends, because they?ve experienced those kinds of connections in their own lives. As an example, I was a guest at a wedding where I was separated from my husband in group photos because the photographer didn?t even consider the possibility that we could be a couple. I had to stop the shot and point out that we were together. A gay photographer is simply going to be more sensitive to that sort of thing.

Soon to be a Non-Issue??

I firmly believe that Marriage Equality will become more and more common. I met my husband ten years ago. If someone had told me then that we?d be able to legally marry in ten years I would have laughed in their face. Things are changing fast. One day, every wedding photographer will have experience shooting same sex couples and this will become a complete non-issue. But that day is not yet here.

Your images are the one thing that you will still have after your wedding day has passed, and the only thing you can pass on to later generations. Your relationship with your photographer will probably be more intimate than with any other person you hire for your wedding. The more they understand how you connect with your intended, both physically and emotionally, and your relationship with your friends and family, the better job they will do in capturing those relationships, and that is the primary job of a wedding photographer, to capture those moments of connection. When you?re hiring someone to capture those moments, it?s important to get it right.

The looming Legal Battle of 3D Printing | 3D Print Plan | All about 3D ...

Vested interests protect their business models.

The cotton growers lobbied the US govt to outlaw Hemp. Australian Mining Companies are doing everything they can to stop the looming Mining Tax. A vocal minority continues to say climate change is a hoax when 97% of climate scientists believe climate change is real.

Are these groups right or wrong? Well hindsight will tell us, but for now we must remain vigilant.

Feathers ? the need a-ruffling!

According to Michael Weinberg, a staff attorney at advocacy group Public Knowledge, the idea that anyone can scan, design, and 3D print anything will be a revolution that will ruffle some feathers.

?3D printing is a disruptive technology,? he said. ?When you are disrupting, when you?re making it so people don?t have to do things anymore, the people who are disrupted, and the people who charge for those things, aren?t always as excited as you are about them.?

Weinberg used the Internet as an example of disruptive technology.

?In the mid 90s, lot of people doing incredible things with computers, networked computers, all over the world,? he said. ?The disrupted industries and congress tried to find a solution, and in 1998, Congress passed the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA). Basically, it sets the rules of the game for digital copyright. DMCA is not all bad, but it doesn?t necessarily reflect all the ways we would want things done if everyone who exists today had been tuned in in 1998.?

Physical Things generally don?t have copyright on them

Now, 3D printers aren?t computers. The things that people can create or copy on a computer and then easily distribute, such as music files, are protected by copyright. But 3D printers work in the physical world. ?While every photo and every article is protected by copyright, most physical things aren?t protected by copyright or any kind of intellectual property copyright,? Weinberg said. ?Objects that do things can?t be protected by copyright. Useful is drawn broadly. Clothing is a useful object. You can patent a pattern on a piece of clothing, but you can?t patent the cut.?

Enter DMCA

However, there have already been legal cases over 3D printing. A user on Thingiverse designed and printed the?Penrose Triangle, a famous optical illusion that isn?t supposed to be buildable in reality. Shortly thereafter, another user figured out how to print the Penrose?and posted the files on Thingiverse.?That first user sent a DMCA takedown, ?and the 3D printing world freaked out,? Weinberg said.

When someone sends a DMCA takedown, the article in question is removed (and if someone contests the takedown, the article is put back up). The problem with this case, Weinberg said, is that someone else invented the Penrose Prime, and an optical illusion might actually be considered a useful product. The case was settled when the user who initially figured out how to print the optical illusion dedicated the rights to the community and dropped the suit.

?There have been times when people have downloaded props from movies to 3D printed websites, and companies send DMCA takedowns,? Weinberg said. ?The sites say, ?okay,? and take them down.?

Weinberg reckons existing laws are handling 3D Printing ok

So far, Weinberg said, existing laws seem to be handling the 3D printing boom pretty well. But that could change. He said there are several ways to protect 3D printing, including introducing it to (the US) Congress now, and in a positive context. Heaven forbid that an Australian politician even knows what 3D Printing is!

?It should not be introduced when someone comes in an says, ?This pirate box is ruining my business!?? Weinberg says.

The best way to protect 3D printing, though, is to use it.

?The worst mistake would be to try to imagine a 3D printing dystopian future and then pass laws today that address those concerns in the dystopian future,? Weinberg says. ?That future would never have happened anyway, and the laws that you pass today are going to stop production innovation and shape it in a way that?s not useful. So instead of imagining a bad thing in the future, have a little confidence in the hundreds of years of intellectual property law up till now, where it?s always been possible to replicate physical objects. Ask: Is this a real problem? Are the laws we have now unable to address them? This technology is something worth protecting, or at least something worth not immediately smothering.?

So in short, use 3D Printing, tell people about it, and remain vigilant to copyright trolls.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ? A fire tore through a two-story home that had no functioning smoke detectors Saturday in West Virginia's capital city, killing eight family members, including six children, the city's mayor said.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said he believed it was the city's deadliest fire in at least six decades. Jones said only one smoke detector was found in a cabinet, and it was not working.

In the yard of the home that sits on a corner in a neighborhood tightly packed with small houses, a children's picnic table, chairs and umbrella were overturned. The outside of the front of the home was blackened by the flames and smoke.

Jones said he was devastated by the news when he got the call sometime after the fire was reported around 3:30 a.m.

"I was with my children and I just grabbed them and hugged them, because I have a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old," he said. "I walked up there and caught a glimpse of some fatalities and it's something that's hard to grasp. The fact that there are (six) dead children, it's unimaginable."

Charleston Assistant Fire Chief Bob Sharp said two of those killed were adults, and all of the children who died were younger than 8.

In addition, one child was on life support at a hospital and not expected to survive, the mayor said.

Ten people were inside the home at the time of the fire and all were related, but Sharp wasn't sure how.

Neighbors indicated there had been a birthday party at the home Friday for one of the adults. Sharp said a couple of families may have been living in the home.

"We're not sure if all these people live here all the time or if it was a weekend thing," he said.

An adult female from the home went to a neighbor's house to report the fire. The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Sharp said firefighters reduced the flames quickly. When they went inside, they immediately came across five victims and "started realizing there were a lot of people in this house, a lot of children."

Sharp said the fire seems to have started in the middle of the home's main level. The cause is under investigation.

Sharp said it was the deadliest fire in the city since seven firefighters perished in while battling a fire at a Woolworth department store in 1949.

"You can imagine how traumatizing that is to us and shocking to the community in general," he said.

Try taking turns.

Very often, both parents awaken when the baby cries, even if only one parent gets up to tend to the baby?s needs. It is not unheard of that both parents get up during the first couple of months. This will lead to a lack of sleep for both parents. It will be easier for everyone involved if you can set up a schedule which determines who gets up. Taking turns allows everybody to get some sleep.

Sleep when baby does.

If you are tired and baby naps, there is no reason why you should stay awake. Sleeping when baby does allows you to at least sleep enough. No matter if baby sleeps in the morning, afternoon or evening, it is good for you to get some needed rest.

Take all the help you can get.

Very often, when a new baby enters the scene, many people ? both family and friends ? are willing to help. So, if you are tired, and someone volunteers, don?t turn down the help offered. Having your mom care for the baby just a couple of hours will allow you to get some much needed sleep.

Baby should stay in the nursery.

Baby should sleep in the nursery instead than with mom and dad. Many times it is tempting to allow the baby to sleep with the parents, but this is not healthy for the child or the parents. It is much better to let baby sleep in the crib in the nursery. This way, when baby wakes up, one parent can go tend to the baby?s needs without bothering the other parent. Both parents will get more sleep this way.

Baby?s tummy should be full before you go to sleep.

No matter if baby has been asleep for hours, you should wake him up to feed him before you go to bed. Many times babies wake up at night because they are hungry, so if you feed them before bedtime, they might sleep until early morning, about 6 or 7 hours. This will definitely help you get more sleep, even if getting as much rest as you wish is not yet in the cards.

World News - Top commander: US can win in Afghanistan, needs ...

The top commander in Afghanistan said Thursday he prefers a robust U.S. combat force of 68,000 in 2013, signaling a potential halt in the drawdown and complicating any effort by President Barack Obama to accelerate the timetable after more than a decade of war.

"My opinion is that we will need significant combat power in 2013," Marine Gen. John Allen told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Pressed by the panel's top Republican, Sen. John McCain, on whether a force of 68,000 would be sufficient, Allen said, "Sixty-eight thousand is a good going-in number, but I owe the president some analysis on that."

In his second public hearing on Capitol Hill this week, the commanding general of the war in Afghanistan argued that the war can still be won, and he warned that a withdrawal of coalition forces would create a vacuum in the region.

"Should the U.S. leave Afghanistan, should ISAF, NATO leave Afghanistan, that would create in my mind, for all intents and purposes, a geopolitical vacuum," Allen said, as the Afghan National Security Forces prepare to take over responsibility.

Allen's comments represent a marker for the military. Obama faces increasing political and public pressure to accelerate the timetable after more than 10 years of fighting and recent incidents that dealt a major setback to the fragile U.S.-Afghanistan relationship. Afghan outrage over the burnings of Qurans and a shooting spree that left 17 Afghan civilians dead have been blamed on Americans.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, tried to get Allen to admit how much money the U.S. will have to pay to fund the Afghan National Security Forces over the next decade, but Allen said he could not say. He did acknowledge that the current annual cost to fund the ANSF's 352,000 troops is between $4 billion and $5 billion, but the entire annual revenue for Afghanistan is only $2 billion, so the international community will be helping the Afghans for some time.

Allen said he remains optimistic that the war can still be won.

"If I didn't think it was do-able I would tell you, and I would tell you very quickly because I wouldn't want to spend another life in this fight if it wasn't do-able," Allen said.

Asked later by Sen. Lindsey Graham whether the current strategy in Afghanistan represents "the last best chance for success in Afghanistan," Allen said quietly, "I concur with that, senator."

Dawn sees new surface features on giant asteroid Vesta

ScienceDaily (Mar. 21, 2012) ? NASA's Dawn spacecraft has revealed unexpected details on the surface of the giant asteroid Vesta. New images and data highlight the diversity of Vesta's surface and reveal unusual geologic features, some of which were never previously seen on asteroids.

These results were discussed March 21, 2012 at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference at The Woodlands, Texas.

Vesta is one of the brightest objects in the solar system and the only asteroid in the so-called main belt between Mars and Jupiter visible to the naked eye from Earth. Dawn has found that some areas on Vesta can be nearly twice as bright as others, revealing clues about the asteroid's history.

"Our analysis finds this bright material originates from Vesta and has undergone little change since the formation of Vesta over 4 billion years ago," said Jian-Yang Li, a Dawn participating scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park. "We're eager to learn more about what minerals make up this material and how the present Vesta surface came to be."

Bright areas appear everywhere on Vesta but are most predominant in and around craters. The areas vary from several hundred feet to around 10 miles (16 kilometers) across. Rocks crashing into the surface of Vesta seem to have exposed and spread this bright material. This impact process may have mixed the bright material with darker surface material.

While scientists had seen some brightness variations in previous images of Vesta from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, Dawn scientists also did not expect such a wide variety of distinct dark deposits across its surface. The dark materials on Vesta can appear dark gray, brown and red. They sometimes appear as small, well-defined deposits around impact craters. They also can appear as larger regional deposits, like those surrounding the impact craters scientists have nicknamed the "snowman."

"One of the surprises was the dark material is not randomly distributed," said David Williams, a Dawn participating scientist at Arizona State University, Tempe. "This suggests underlying geology determines where it occurs."

The dark materials seem to be related to impacts and their aftermath. Scientists theorize carbon-rich asteroids could have hit Vesta at speeds low enough to produce some of the smaller deposits without blasting away the surface.

Higher-speed asteroids also could have hit Vesta's surface and melted the volcanic basaltic crust, darkening existing surface material. That melted conglomeration appears in the walls and floors of impact craters, on hills and ridges, and underneath brighter, more recent material called ejecta, which is material thrown out from a space rock impact.

Vesta's dark materials suggest the giant asteroid may preserve ancient materials from the asteroid belt and beyond, possibly from the birth of the solar system.

"Some of these past collisions were so intense they melted the surface," said Brett Denevi, a Dawn participating scientist at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md. "Dawn's ability to image the melt marks a unique find. Melting events like these were suspected, but never before seen on an asteroid."

Dawn launched in September 2007. It will reach its second destination, Ceres, in February 2015.

"Dawn's ambitious exploration of Vesta has been going beautifully," said Marc Rayman, Dawn chief engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "As we continue to gather a bounty of data, it is thrilling to reveal fascinating alien landscapes."

Blast hits Aleppo; clashes and protests across Syria

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A car bomb ripped through a residential area of Syria's second city Aleppo on Sunday, as activists reported heavy clashes across the country between state forces and rebels fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

World powers have been unable to stop more than a year of bloodshed in Syria, a country that sits on the fault lines of several regional and ethnic conflicts. Recent army gains against rebel positions have shown no sign of quelling the violence and no negotiated settlement is in sight.

In Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, state news agency SANA said terrorists were behind the car bomb that killed two people and wounded 30 others when it exploded in a central area close to a state security office and a church.

Opposition activists accused the government of staging the explosion to back up its official line that foreign-backed extremists are behind the uprising. The government says about 2,000 members of security forces have been killed in the unrest.

The explosion came a day after twin blasts killed 27 people in the capital Damascus and wounded nearly 100 others.

Aleppo had seen less unrest than much of Syria but has recently been hit with more violence as revolt spreads and becomes increasingly bloody. The United Nations says more than 8,000 have been killed and humanitarian conditions are grim.

The semi-official news channel al-Ikhbariya said security forces had been tipped off about the bomb in Aleppo and had been moving residents out of the area when it went off. It said the car had been filled with 200 kilogrammes of explosives.

Pictures on the SANA website showed building fronts blasted open and aid workers standing near piles of shattered masonry and bomb craters, while Syria TV showed a street corner splattered in blood.

"The explosion came suddenly and the only thing I thought to do was fall to the ground," a girl told Syria TV, her hands and face covered in shards of glass. "Nothing remained. All the building fronts collapsed. God curse them."

No group claimed responsibility for the Aleppo attack, and an activist from the opposition's local Revolutionary Council said the government was behind the explosion.

"They want to make our uprising seem like a terrorist operation to the rest of the world, but it is not," said the activist called Marwan, who spoke to Reuters by telephone.

CLASHES, RAIDS ACROSS SYRIA

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 19 people, including four children, had died in rocket and gunfire during army raids and fighting with rebels across the country on Sunday.

Fighting was heaviest in the northwestern province of Deir Ezzor, where activists said rebels had taken over some of the streets in the provinces main city and had torched at least two army vehicles. At least 14 soldiers and five rebels died in the fighting, which calmed by evening, the Observatory said.

In the southern province of Deraa, a sniper shot dead two men in Dael, the British-based Observatory said, and thousands took to the street to mourn the deaths and protest four decades of Assad family rule.

In northern Idlib, gunmen shot dead a Turkish lorry driver, Turkey's state-run Anatolian news agency said, but it did not specify when the attack took place.

Reports from Syria are difficult to verify as the government has restricted access to foreign journalists.

Aid groups also have limited access but were recently allowed a joint mission between staff from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Syrian government and the United Nations. The group is now in Damascus planning the mission.

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross Jakob Kellenberger was on his way to Moscow on Sunday to ask Russia to help persuade Damascus to let more humanitarian aid into the country.

PROTESTS, ARRESTS IN CAPITAL

In the capital, as hundreds gathered to mourn victims of Saturday's car bombs, activists said security forces beat and arrested people at a march of more than 200 when protesters began shouting "the people want to topple the regime".

The phrase has echoed through the wave of Arab uprisings that began last year and has toppled autocratic rulers in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen.

"At first they shouted slogans against violence and the police didn't do anything, but as soon as they started to call for regime change the police rushed in and started beating people with canes," said Rami Abdelrahman, head of the Observatory.

The protest, which called for non-violent resistance to the government, had been led by moderate opposition leaders previously tolerated by the government because of their calls for dialogue and rejection of foreign intervention.

Activists said the Sunday march aimed to commemorate the peaceful roots of Syria's uprising, which has been overshadowed by a growing armed insurgency against state security forces.

Security forces beat and arrested Mohammed Sayyed Rassas, a leader of the National Coordinating Body for Democratic Change (NCB), an opposition group which had visited China and Russia in attempts to promote dialogue between Assad and the opposition.

Most opposition groups have rejected the NCB over its insistence on non-violence and its stance against foreign intervention, arguing the government's fierce crackdown has made arming the uprising inevitable.

Security forces also arrested Farzand Omar, a doctor and politician from the party "Building the Syria State," when he arrived at the Damascus airport from his hometown of Aleppo.

"His arrest confirms once again that Syrian authorities repress all their opponents and are dishonest in claiming that they respect and accept member of the Syrian opposition or accept dialogue," the party said in a statement.

Syrian government forces have crushed a rebel stronghold in the central city of Homs and have been pounding rebel strongholds in northern Idlib. Activists reported heavy clashes and extensive security force raids in the embattled province, which borders Turkey.

"It's clear that the battle is finishing in the regime's favor overall," said a Lebanese official close to Assad's government.

Rebels argue they are making tactical retreats and will continue to reappear whenever the army eases its grip, hoping to tire out Assad's forces.

"On the security level there is a long and difficult struggle for the regime and it is obvious this will take a long time to finish," the Lebanese source said. "We will see many more explosions like those we saw yesterday but in general they have finished off the military fight and they don't have much more to do."
