But the B-2 bomber runs ? along with the US military?s unusually frank announcement of this fact ? were designed to send a far more pointed warning to North Korea, and more precisely to the country?s young dictator, Kim Jong-un, who lately has been increasingly bellicose in his words and actions, say senior US officials.
Kim?s ?provocative actions? and ?belligerent tone? have ?ratcheted up the danger, and I think we have to understand that reality,? Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Thursday afternoon in his first joint press conference with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey.
This danger includes the nation?s third nuclear test in February and threats to aim long-range artillery and rockets at US and allied troops.
The B-2 bomber can fly some 6,500 miles, drop smart bombs, and is nuclear-capable.
It is also the same US aircraft that infamously hit the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, in 1999.
While this was described as an accident at the time, conventional wisdom among many defense analysts today is that China?s Peoples Liberation Army forces in the embassy basement were sending out intelligence?information to President Slobodan Milosevic of Yugoslavia, whose military was committing atrocities.
The B-2 bomber does, after all, have the most precisely targeted munitions in any military arsenal, accurate to within two meters, the defense analysts point out.?
Yet regardless of whether this theory about the 1999 B-2 bombing is true, the point is that the Chinese and North Korean government believe it to be true, says Patrick Cronin, senior director of the Asia-Pacific Security Program at the Center for a New American Security.
For that reason, the training run involving the B-2 bombers ?is a subtle signal to China and North Korea to say ?Look, war can really happen. We?re not going to be deterred, and we?re going to go after high-value target sites.? ?
But does the US know enough about Kim?s rationality to bring out the B-2 bombers, which could further provoke North Korea?
?There are a lot of unknowns here,? Mr. Hagel conceded Thursday. ?But we have to take seriously every provocative, bellicose word and action that this new young leader has taken so far since he?s come to power.?
Given those unknowns, then, is it wise to eye-poke an unpredictable ? possibly irrational ? new dictator?
?I don?t think we?re poking,? Hagel said. ?I don?t think we?re doing anything extraordinary, or provocative, or out of the orbit of what other nations do to protect their own interests.?
The point, both General Dempsey and Hagel reiterated, is not just to flex US military muscles for North Korea?s benefit, but more importantly to reassure US allies that the Pentagon has their back.
?The reaction to the B-2 that we?re most concerned about it not necessarily the reaction that it might elicit in North Korea,? Dempsey said Thursday. ?Those exercises are mostly to assure our allies that they can count on us to be prepared.?

DENVER (AP) ? From a young age, no one could tame Evan Spencer Ebel.
His parents sent him to special camps in Utah, Jamaica and Samoa for children with behavioral problems. Neighbors in the middle-class suburbs west of Denver shied away from a kid they described as "a handful."
By age 20, state prison had become Ebel's home. There, he joined a white supremacist gang and ended up in solitary confinement, a place his parents believe soon began to eat away at his already troubled mind.
On Jan. 28, when his term was up, Ebel was set free.
Two months later, he is dead after a shootout with Texas authorities and is a suspect in the death of Colorado's state prisons chief, who was gunned down when he answered the front door of his house. Investigators have said the gun used to in the Texas shootout was the same weapon used to kill Colorado's prisons chief.
Now investigators are trying to piece together whether the final actions of the 28-year-old sprung from his own ideas or came at the direction of a prison gang ? an idea some close to him reject.
His mother, Jody Mangue, says her son was more complicated than news media stories imply.
"He was not a follower by any means," she posted in an online memorial site, suggesting that white inmates are often labeled members of such gangs even if they don't join.
The Colorado Independent website quoted a former inmate and member of the prison gang who said Ebel had left the group and was having a hard time integrating back into society.
"He told me that he needed to release some anxiety," the former inmate, Ryan Pettigrew, told the website, adding the killing did not seem like a gang hit. "He needed that violence as a release so he could calm down. He didn't know any other way."
Ebel's parents haven't returned calls to The Associated Press for comment. But stories from both can be found in an online blog that those close to the family have confirmed the mother wrote, and legislative testimony from the father, who had begged the state to change its solitary confinement rules.
Mangue wrote that her son was an energetic child who accompanied his mother to hand out food and clothes to homeless people in Denver. That energy also was a problem, though. In an earlier online essay, written after visiting her son in prison, Mangue noted that she and Ebel's father began sending their son to camps for troubled youth when he was 12.
"Some people may blame us for what has happened to Evan," she wrote then. "I can only say that his dad and I had to make hard decisions when he was younger hoping to avoid where he is now."
On Jan. 31, 2004, Ebel's younger sister died in a traffic accident, devastating him.
"He was the protective big brother and in this case, was unable to protect her," Mangue wrote. "His life deteriorated after that and he just became numb and lost his direction altogether, between using drugs and committing crimes."
Court records show that Ebel pleaded guilty a few months after his sister's death ? in July 2004 ? to holding a semi-automatic pistol to an acquaintance's head and stealing his wallet while they watched a Denver Broncos game on television. He was first sent to a halfway house. But after being linked to two other armed robberies, he went to state prison.
Corrections officials won't release detailed information about Ebel's prison time, saying the case remains under investigation. But court records show that in 2006, he punched a prison guard in the nose and was convicted of assaulting a corrections official. He was sent to solitary confinement, where he did "Navy Seal type exercises" and read obsessively ? including "War and Peace" several times over, Mangue wrote. Disgusted by prison chow, Ebel became a vegetarian.
Jack Ebel testified before Colorado's Legislature about how solitary confinement changed his son.
"He'll rant a little bit," the elder Ebel told legislators. "He'll stammer. He'll be frustrated that he can't find the words. And I let him get it out, and eventually, because I'm his father, he will talk to me. And I'm convinced, if any of the rest of you were to go talk to him, he wouldn't be able to talk to you."
Jack Ebel also mentioned his son's suffering to Gov. John Hickenlooper, whom he first met when both men worked at an oil and gas firm 30 years ago. They'd stayed in touch even as Hickenlooper launched a career in politics and won the governor's office in 2010.
As he assembled his cabinet, Hickenlooper wooed a deeply religious, data-driven Missouri corrections official to run Colorado's state prisons system. During Hickenlooper's interview with Tom Clements, the Missouri official mentioned his concerns about solitary confinement.
Since Clements came to Colorado in 2011, the number of inmates in solitary confinement has nearly been halved.
"The irony is incredible," Hickenlooper said. "One of the things Tom fought for, we have too many people in solitary confinement with mental disorders, like Evan Ebel."
In January, Ebel was released on mandatory parole ? meaning that even though he'd completed his sentence, he still had to abide by a parole agreement or be thrown back in prison. Corrections spokeswoman Alison Morgan said she couldn't discuss the terms of Ebel's release but that every parolee has to comply with certain personalized requirements, like attending anger management or substance abuse counseling. She said the state also offers parolees help with housing and job placement.
Little is known about Ebel's final two months. However investigators have offered a hint of how he might have gotten the gun used in Texas, even though he was a convicted felon who couldn't legally have one. Colorado Bureau of Investigation agents on Wednesday arrested a suburban Denver woman suspected of legally purchasing a gun and then transferring it to Ebel. Records related to the arrest of Stevie Marie Vigil, 22, were sealed.
It's unclear whether he knew of Clements' reformist goals or just viewed him like many other inmates, as "The Man," as they called whoever ran the prisons agency. It's also unclear if he remained a member of the 211s white supremacist gang that law enforcement officials say he had joined in prison.
On Sunday, March 17, police found the body of Nathan Leon, a father of three who worked as a Domino's deliveryman and had vanished after answering an order that day. Days later, Clements answered the doorbell at his house and was shot in the chest.
Authorities asked people to look out for a dark, late-model car that had been spotted idling outside Clements' house shortly before the shooting. Two days later, a sheriff's deputy in an empty stretch of North Texas pulled Ebel over. Ebel shot and wounded him, and sped off.
Authorities gave chase. Ebel peppered them with gunfire before crashing his 1991 Cadillac into an 18-wheeler hauling gravel near the town of Decatur.
Three deputies surrounded him, but he left his wrecked vehicle and opened fire. The deputies shot back. Ebel was hit in the head and died at a Fort Worth hospital. He had bomb-making equipment, instructions and other plans in his car, but it's not clear where he was going.
One thing was clear, said Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins: "He wasn't planning on being taken alive."

Mar. 28, 2013 ? Marital conflict is a significant source of environmental stress for children, and witnessing such conflict may harm children's stress response systems which, in turn, may affect their mental and intellectual development.
These conclusions come from a new study by researchers at Auburn University and the Catholic University of America. The study appears in the journal Child Development.
Researchers looked at 251 children from a variety of backgrounds who lived in two-parent homes. The children reported on their exposure to marital conflict when they were 8, providing information on the frequency, intensity, and lack of resolution of conflicts between their parents. The study gauged how children's stress response system functioned by measuring respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), an index of activity in the parasympathetic branch of the body's stress response system. RSA has been linked to the ability to regulate attention and emotion. Children's ability to rapidly solve problems and quickly see patterns in new information also was measured at ages 8, 9, and 10.
Children who witnessed more marital conflict at age 8 showed less adaptive RSA reactivity at 9, but this was true only for children who had lower resting RSA. In addition, children with lower baseline RSA whose stress response systems were also less adaptive developed mental and intellectual ability more slowly.
"The findings provide further evidence that stress affects the development of the body's stress response systems that help regulate attention, and that how these systems work is tied to the development of cognitive ability," explains J. Benjamin Hinnant, assistant professor of psychology at the Catholic University of America and one of the researchers.

A severed head found on a golf course 24 years ago has been identified using DNA evidence and may be linked to a serial killer, New Jersey police said today.
The head of 25-year-old Heidi Balch, who worked as a prostitute around Manhattan in 1988, was found on a Hopewell Township, N.J., golf course, in 1989, but was only identified this month after collaboration between the New Jersey State Police and the Hopewell Township Police Department.
"It was shocking," said Hopewell Township Police Chief George Meyer, who was one of the detectives called to the scene after the head was found near the seventh hole.
"Periodically, over the years, detectives would pick up the case and make efforts at identifying her," he said. "I kind of thought, 'No, she is never going to be identified.'"
A break came when detectives realized the dumped head matched a story from serial killer Joel Rifkin, who claimed to have dismembered and dumped a victim named Susie around New Jersey, State Police Det. Sgt. Stephen Urbanski told ABCNews.com. Rifkin was never convicted for the alleged crime, but is serving 200 years in prison for other murders.
Detectives decided to chase the story.
"The team obtained the names of all the prostitutes that were registered around the same time [from the NYPD]," Urbanski said.
They then compared the photos to the composite of the severed head. A woman named Susan Spencer seemed to be a match.
After chasing aliases and false Social Security numbers attached to the woman, a face on a missing persons website jumped out at Urbanski.
It was Heidi Balch.
The problem was, Balch wasn't reported missing by her aunt until 2001 and, when making the report, she told police her niece was last seen in 1995.
Still, the team decided to pursue the lead and paid the aunt a visit. Not only did they learn that the sighting in 1995 was secondhand information, but Balch's parents were alive and living in Baltimore.
"After interviewing [the aunt], we went down to Baltimore and grabbed the mom's DNA," Urbanski said.
The DNA was a match to the skull, closing the 24-year-old cold case.
"Looking at the horrific case, and after a lot of people worked on it, it was amazing it came to this," Urbanski said. "It was a matter of finding those clues."

PARKERS PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- Thousands of gallons of oil leaked onto frozen ground after a train carrying crude from Canada derailed Wednesday in western Minnesota.
The 94-car Canadian Pacific train was headed south near Parkers Prairie when it lost air pressure and went into an emergency braking mode, the Otter Tail County sheriff's office said. Fourteen tankers derailed. Three either leaked or spilled oil. No one was hurt, and a spokesman for the state's pollution control agency said crews were able to control the spill.
An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 gallons leaked onto the ground, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency spokesman Dan Olson said. The spill was contained in a field and ditch in a rural area, and the cold weather helped keep the spill contained and prevented oil from moving down the ditch or into the ground, Olson said.
One heavily damaged car spilled much of its 26,000-gallon load, Olson said. He said the oil was "just oozing out" in the cold.
Because the ground is frozen, there's no threat to water, Olson said. Initial recovery efforts likely will take a day or two, and excavations then will be done to determine if any oil leaked into the soil, he said.
The railroad was cleaning up the spill, Canadian Pacific spokesman Ed Greenberg said.
While the spill appeared to be under control from an ecological standpoint, it could play a role in the politics surrounding the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport oil from tar sands in Canada to refineries in Texas. Environmentalists have criticized the proposal, saying that a pipeline could be prone to spills and would ensure that the carbon-laden tar sands are fully developed. A recent analysis from the State Department seemed to knock down one of their arguments, by saying that when it comes to global warming, shipping the oil by pipeline would release less pollution than using rail.
Greenberg said he did not know if the oil that spilled was tar sands oil. The train, carrying a mix of cargo, originated in western Canada and was bound for Chicago, he said.

A strain of probiotic bacteria that can fight harmful bacterial infections in poultry has the ability to change its coat, according to new findings from the Institute of Food Research.
The probiotic is currently being taken forward through farm-scale trials to evaluate how well it combats Clostridium perfringens a cause of necrotic enteritis in poultry and the second most common cause of food poisoning in the UK
The researchers at IFR, which is strategically funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, had previously found that the probiotic Lactobacillus johnsonsii, when given to young chicks, prevents the colonisation of C. perfringens. Now, in research published in the journal PLOS ONE, they have found that the probiotic bacteria have the ability to alter their coat. They speculate that this could be one way in which the probiotic outcompete C. perfringens.
The researchers noticed when examining the bacteria that a small number of them appear smooth. They identified genes responsible for making a special coat, or slime capsule, which the bacteria surround themselves in. This protects the bacteria from stomach acids and bile salts, and helps them come together to form biofilms. It may also protect against drying out when outside the host. The natural appearance of smooth mutants could be a ploy used by the bacteria to introduce variation into its populations, making them able to take advantage of different environments.
By turning off one or more of the coat genes, they could see what effect this had on its ability to stick to gut tissues. "The next step is to understand the regulation of the genes involved in making the coat" said Dr Arjan Narbad, who led the studies. "We want to find out whether changing the coat affects the probiotic's fitness to colonise and inhabit the gut."
This in turn could prevent C. perfringens from colonising the gut. This competitive exclusion could be one reason why the probiotic strain prevents the growth of other harmful bacteria.
Understanding the role of the slime capsule coat will inform the commercial development of this strain as a preventative treatment for C. perfringens infection in poultry, especially in regard to how the probiotic is stored and produced. Through the technology transfer company Plant Bioscience Ltd, the strain has been patented and is now in large-scale farm trials to assess its efficacy. As these bacteria have previously been used in the food chain and are considered safe for human consumption, this probiotic strain could become new way of controlling C. perfringens.
As there is a growing pressure to reduce the use of antibiotics in farming, new products are needed to maintain animal welfare standards, reduce the huge costs of necrosis in poultry and help keep our food safe.

Toxicity problems and adverse side effects when taking lithium, the mainstay medication for treating bipolar disorder, are fostering a scientific hunt for insights into exactly how lithium works in the body with an eye to developing a safer alternative. That's the topic of the cover story in the current edition of Chemical & Engineering News. C&EN is the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.
Bethany Halford, C&EN senior editor, explains that lithium often is the first-line medication used to calm the highs and boost the lows of bipolar disorder, which affects about 9 million people at some point in their lives in the United States alone. Lithium has distinct advantages over the dozen or so other medications. For instance, lithium is the only medication proven effective in preventing suicide in the mania phase of bipolar disorder. Lithium also is inexpensive.
The article explains, however, that lithium also has drawbacks, with a fine line between the effective dose and the toxic dose. Side effects include thyroid problems, weight gain and, in some cases, kidney failure. Toxicity problems and adverse side effects when taking lithium, the mainstay medication for treating bipolar disorder, are fostering a scientific hunt for insights into exactly how lithium works in the body with an eye to developing a safer alternative. That's the topic of the cover story in the current edition of Chemical & Engineering News. C&EN is the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.
Bethany Halford, C&EN senior editor, explains that lithium often is the first-line medication used to calm the highs and boost the lows of bipolar disorder, which affects about 9 million people at some point in their lives in the United States alone. Lithium has distinct advantages over the dozen or so other medications. For instance, lithium is the only medication proven effective in preventing suicide in the mania phase of bipolar disorder. Lithium also is inexpensive.
The article explains, however, that lithium also has drawbacks, with a fine line between the effective dose and the toxic dose. Side effects include thyroid problems, weight gain and, in some cases, kidney failure. To bastardize Mark Twain, the revival of BlackBerry has been greatly exaggerated.
The troubled smartphone maker notched a small win with its latest quarterly earnings report, announcing a modest profit of $98 million. Analysts had been expecting a loss, which is why the earnings news boosted the stock price by about 3 percent.
BlackBerry clearly isn't dead yet. Its new BlackBerry 10 smartphone, which will come in several varieties, has earned good reviews, and the company said it sold a million units in the first month the device went on sale. Most of those sales were in a handful of overseas markets, where BlackBerry's devices have remained more popular than they are in the United States.

But the once-hot Canadian company still faces severe challenges, and even its CEO, Thorsten Heins, acknowledges BlackBerry may eventually need to find a buyer, unable to go it alone. The Z10 touch-screen phone that's just going on sale in the United States must win back at least some of the customers lost in recent years to Apple and Android phones. And the Q10, which features BlackBerry's popular physical keyboard and goes on sale later this spring, must turn out to be a complement to the Z10 rather than a competitor that cannibalizes BlackBerry's own sales.

Even if BlackBerry were to build a killer phone, it still requires a helping hand from wireless carriers such as AT&T and Verizon.
"There's still room for BlackBerry in the smartphone market," says Carolina Milanesi of technology-research firm Gartner. "The first thing to watch will be the amount of advertising carriers put behind it, and how much support BlackBerry gets from the carriers. A lot of work still needs to be done."
BlackBerry also needs to persuade developers to write new apps for the BB10, which is possibly the biggest disadvantage BlackBerry faces compared with Apple and Android devices. Above all, the company needs to reestablish a cool factor, something that's extremely hard to do once a company has drifted down to also-ran status.
Despite the recent profit, there are discouraging signs. BlackBerry's subscriber base fell during the recent quarter form 79 million users to 76 million, a bigger drop than many analysts anticipated.

"We expect the company to continue to lose subscribers lured away by the iPhone 5 and Galaxy SIII," Standard & Poor's said in its latest report on BlackBerry. "Also, we believe the high price of the BB10 devices will make them a difficult sell in emerging markets, where BlackBerry has had a big impact in recent years with its less expensive handsets."
Some stock analysts think a recent run-up in the company's shares--which have risen 26 percent since the start of the year, as the company has finally executed the launch of its much-awaited BB10 devices--could be a high-water mark. Analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ expect BlackBerry to lose money through 2016, which is as far into the future as such forecasts go. As Apple itself has proven, anything can happen in the hot market for smartphones, so BlackBerry could still bust a move that makes it a player once again. The question is whether anybody will notice.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tim McCarver will make his 55th straight season of Major League Baseball his last.
The two-time champion catcher will call the World Series this year and then retire from his analyst job at Fox.
"I wanted to step down while I know I can still do the job and proud of the job I've done," the 71-year-old McCarver said during a conference call Wednesday.
His health is good, McCarver said. So are his passion and energy for the game.
It was just time.
"It's not a tough call," he said. "It's not a sad thing for me."
McCarver had been thinking about moving on for a couple of years. This winter, Fox executives visited him at his home in Florida to discuss extending his contract, which expired after the 2013 season.
They never even started negotiations. McCarver had already made up his mind.
He has worked 28 consecutive MLB postseasons on network television dating to 1984, providing analysis for a record 23 World Series.
McCarver got his start in broadcasting in 1980 with the Philadelphia Phillies and NBC's "Game of the Week." He has also called local games for the New York Mets and Yankees and the San Francisco Giants.
McCarver later worked for ABC and CBS before joining Fox in 1996. Last year, he was honored by baseball's Hall of Fame with the Ford C. Frick Award for major contributions to baseball broadcasting.
"You've always been a great symbol of class," Commissioner Bud Selig told McCarver on the conference call.
McCarver spent 21 seasons in the majors between 1959 and 1980, mostly with the Cardinals and Phillies. He was a two-time All-Star and won the World Series in 1964 and 1967 with St. Louis.
He missed the start of the 2011 AL championship series because of a minor heart-related procedure, but the test result that necessitated that medical work turned out to be a false positive.
McCarver has seen other people in various businesses stay at their jobs until their health eventually forced them out, and their quality of life was often not very good after they retired. McCarver didn't want that for himself.
A wine aficionado with a second home in California's Napa Valley, he'd love to travel to Italy for cooking classes.
"I plan on living a very long life, believe me," McCarver said. "I hope Mother Nature cooperates."
McCarver could still appear on Fox or its new cable network, Fox Sports 1, in a different role in the future. But until he tests out retirement, he can't predict whether he'll still want to do a little broadcasting.
McCarver worked with announcer Jack Buck on CBS from 1990-91 then became broadcast partners with his son, Joe Buck, at Fox in 1996.
Joe Buck said he had learned more about broadcasting from McCarver than anyone else, "even my father."

Bayer CropScience and Helena Chemical Co. have committed to separate investments at Agricenter International totaling nearly $20 million.
Executives from the two companies will be at the East Memphis center Monday, April 1, with Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell and Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam to break ground on the research laboratory and greenhouse facilities.
Bayer CropScience will build a $17 million greenhouse, including 40,000 square feet of greenhouse space plus open office space. All are of part of Bayer?s research and development of cottonseed and cotton.
Helena Chemical has had a presence at Agricenter for 20 years. Its latest addition will be a $2.2 million new research formulation laboratory as well as some improvements to existing facilities at Agricenter.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Animated movie "The Croods," the story of a prehistoric family seeking a new home, debuted at the top of box office charts with $44.7 million in weekend ticket sales in the United States and Canada.
The 3D family film from "Shrek" and "Madagascar" creator Dreamworks Animation dethroned two-time champion "Oz the Great and Powerful," which slipped to third place. The Walt Disney Co prequel to "The Wizard of Oz" earned $22 million during its third weekend, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
In between the two family films, thriller "Olympus Has Fallen" about a White House under terrorist attack took in $30.5 million from Friday through Sunday.
"The Croods" was produced by Dreamworks Animation and distributed by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp. "Olympus Has Fallen" was released by privately held FilmDistrict.

A Little League in Illinois is raffling off an AR-15 military-style assault rifle to raise money for its kids.
The Atwood-Hammond Little League partnered with the local armory for the raffle, which launched Tuesday. "It has been going gangbusters," Charidy Butcher, co-owner of the Atwood Armory, told WAND-TV. ?My phone has been ringing nonstop since 4:30 this morning. It?s just been crazy."
Butcher said she's gotten calls from people as far away as Washington state wanting to enter the June 29 drawing. A ticket costs $20.
"It?s for a good cause, for the kids, and we?re just trying to raise as much money as we can," she said. "Their fundraiser last year only raised $10.?
The winner of the gun?a Rock River Arms AR-15?will have to go through a standard background check, Butcher added. The rifle is similar to the one used in the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
According to Atwood-Hammond Little League commissioner Steven McClain, the league is in desperate need of new equipment. "When you don't have enough stuff to even practice with, it's hard to run a team," McClain told WAND-TV.
It's not the first gun fundraiser for the Atwood Armory. Earlier this month, the shop raised more than $7,000 for a cancer charity with a similar raffle.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iranian authorities have blocked many foreign-based virtual private networks, or VPNs, severely restricting access to many websites.
The VPNs are illegal in Iran but offered a path for Iranians to freely use the Internet, access banned opposition websites as well as popular sites such as Facebook.
A report Tuesday by the independent Donya-e Eghtesad daily quotes lawmaker Ramazan Ali Sobhani as saying his parliamentary committee in charge of communications will review the results of the block on VPNs, which went into effect last Wednesday.
Sobhani says the block restricted access to some international email services such as Gmail and Yahoo in some parts of the country.
Since the street unrest that followed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's 2009 re-election, Iran has tightened restrictions on VPN use and occasionally blocked them.

The King County Sheriff's Office is trying to find Michael Boysen, the grandson of an elderly couple found dead in their Renton, Wash., home on Saturday.

An "extremely dangerous" ex-con was being hunted Monday in the Pacific Northwest after his elderly grandparents were found slain, officials said.
Michael "Chad" Boysen, 26, was staying with his grandparents in the Seattle suburb of Renton, Wash., shortly after being released from prison, King County Sheriff?s Department 911 supervisor Susan Chapin said.
A relative became concerned when she couldn?t reach the grandparents and they did not return phone calls. When she drove to their house, she found their bodies about 7 p.m. (10 p.m. ET) local time Saturday, Chapin said. Their names have not been released.
Police confirmed that a warrant had been issued for Boysen's arrest on suspicion of first-degree murder.
?He was staying there. The couple?s car was taken. There was no sign of forced entry into the home. He was just released from prison after serving a year for burglary,? Chapin said.
Further investigation indicated that Boysen had been searching online for places to buy guns, including gun shows, in Washington state and Nevada.
Police have called him ?extremely dangerous.?
?I think the fact that he?s believed to have killed two people who were close to him and then he starts looking for guns, we should consider him armed and dangerous,? Chapin said.
Washington state?s gun laws require a waiting period for handguns purchased through a dealer.
Boysen is 5 foot 10 and 170 pounds with dark hair and hazel eyes. He is thought to be driving a red 2001 Chrysler 300. The car?s original tags, which may have been changed, were Washington plates bearing the number 046 XXU.
Police say that Boysen should not be approached and that anyone who sees him should call 911 immediately.
"I can't stress how dangerous this guy is," King County Sheriff John Urquhart said at a Monday news conference. He said Boysen had made threats against family members and law enforcement officials, but he did not elaborate.
"We have to catch him as soon as we can," Urquhart said.
Urquhart said the grandparents were not shot, but he declined to provide other details about their killings, pending autopsies.

For years, researchers have developed thin films of bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) ? which converts heat into electricity or electricity to cooling ? on top of gallium arsenide (GaAs) to create cooling devices for electronics. But while they knew it could be done, it was not clear how ? because the atomic structures of those unlikely pair of materials do not appear to be compatible. Now researchers from North Carolina State University and RTI International have solved the mystery, opening the door to new research in the field.
"We've used state-of-the-art technology to solve a mystery that has been around for years," says Dr. James LeBeau, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and co-author of a paper on the research. "And now that we know what is going on, we can pursue research to fine-tune the interface of these materials to develop more efficient mechanisms for converting electricity to cooling or heat into electricity. Ultimately, this could have applications in a wide range of electronic devices."
To study the phenomenon, the researchers had to create the nanometer-scale thin films on a GaAs substrate, or foundation. The GaAs is first placed in a vapor deposition chamber. Molecules containing bismuth and tellurium are then introduced into the chamber, where they react with each other and "grow" into a crystalline Bi2Te3 structure on the surface of the GaAs.
Using advanced "Super-X" X-ray spectroscopy technology in conjunction with an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope, the researchers were able to determine what was binding the Bi2Te3 to the GaAs ? and it was not what they were expecting.
They found that when the tellurium molecules were introduced to the vapor deposition chamber, the tellurium reacted with the GaAs substrate to create a new surface layer of gallium telluride, which was only one molecule thick. The Bi2Te3 then formed a thin film on top of that new surface layer.
Because gallium telluride does not react with Bi2Te3, the research team knew chemical bonding could not be holding them together. Instead, the two layers are held together by the weaker force of van der Waals bonds ? meaning the materials are held together by weak electrical forces.
"While these materials have been investigated previously by RTI and NC State, the state-of-the-art techniques applied by LeBeau and his team have revealed significant new insights into how the film grows," notes Dr. Rama Venkatasubramanian of RTI International, who is also a co-author of the paper.

But the top political newsmaker of the week was not included in that group, nor was he invited to join any of the TV news blabfests Sunday ? Sen. Rand Paul (R) of Kentucky.
Why is that, and what does it indicate about Sen. Ron Paul?s future?
Does he even have a future beyond the libertarian/tea party corner of American politics? That?s the place where his father, retired congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul (R) of Texas, drew an enthusiastic (although minority) following, making it tougher for more establishment candidates like Mitt Romney to win their party?s nomination and annoying fellow Republicans generally.
Some senior Republican senators did find the younger Mr. Paul annoying when he held up Senate business for 13 hours, filibustering the nomination of John Brennan to be director of the CIA. It was not personal, he had said, but a point of principle: The need for the Obama administration to concede that targeting suspected American terrorists on US soil without due process would be unconstitutional.
Sen. John McCain accused Paul of a ?political stunt,? and Sen. Lindsey Graham called the junior senator from Kentucky ?ill-informed.?
Perhaps, but it?s also worth noting that although Americans generally approve of drone attacks on terrorists abroad, most agree with Paul on his key point about targeting US citizens at home.
Given the low regard with which most of those polled hold Congress ? Obama is dropping in some polls too ? does this indicate an opening for Paul among the younger, fresher generation of GOP politicians, some of whom spelled him during his filibuster?
People certainly paid attention to the maverick senator. More than a million tweets were sent during his filibuster ? nearly as many as during Obama?s State of the Union address, Twitter reported on its government blog.
One in particular who paid attention is Mo Elleithee, faculty member at Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute and a Democratic political consultant who worked for Hillary Clinton?s presidential campaign in 2008.
