Will Derek Hough be back on 'Dancing'?

Derek Hough may be back for yet another season of "DWTS."

"Dancing With the Stars" pro Derek Hough seems poised to win his fourth mirror ball trophy Tuesday night with partner Kellie Pickler. But will he return when the show comes back in September for another season?

?I don?t know yet,? he told reporters on the post-show red carpet Monday. ?Next year (2014) is going to be a little different. That?s when these projects I?m working on will come to life. Right now, they?re in the preparation stages. (So) it might be a good idea to do next season.?

As fans of Hough know, the three-time winner almost didn?t partake in this season.

?I was literally within an hour of not doing it,? he shared. ?I called the producers and said I have this weird feeling that I need to do this season. ... They said, ?Well, we need to know within the next hour.? Then, I was like, ?OK, Let?s do it.? Now, I know why.?

That reason? His amazing run with current partner, "American Idol" alum Pickler.

Judge Carrie Ann Inaba criticized the pair earlier in the season for not having enough of an emotional connection in their dances.

?That actually stuck with me,? Hough said. ?I wanted (our freestyle) to be an emotional routine. I wanted it to connect with people and connect with us. Afterwards, I looked over and saw Carrie Ann crying. That was the moment to top off the season for us.?

Hough knows he could have gone all out and added more production values to the freestyle routine, but he opted to keep it simple.

?I?m all for big productions,? he told TODAY.com. ?I love putting on shows. I wondered if it was it right to downsize the routine physically and supersize it emotionally? I wanted to make it about Kellie and not wow the audience with a spectacle, but to wow them with heart. I think it paid off, but there was definitely a ping pong match going on in my mind.?

Top figures may be barred from Iran's June ballot

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's election process slipped into a tense holding pattern Tuesday amid speculation that candidates blocked from the ballot include a top aide of outgoing President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and a former president who revived hopes of reformers.

Their potential exclusion from the June 14 presidential ballot would give establishment-friendly candidates a clear path to succeed Ahmadinejad, who has lost favor with the ruling clerics after years of power struggles. It also pushes moderate and opposition voices further to the margins as Iran's leadership faces critical challenges such as international sanctions and talks with world powers over Tehran's nuclear program.

The official ballot list decision by Iran's election overseers was kept under wraps after being finalized and could be released Wednesday. The one-day delay suggested authorities allowed some time for appeals by the blackballed candidates and their backers to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has final say in all matters.

Several news outlets, including the state-run Press TV, carried what they called "unconfirmed" reports that two prominent but divisive figures ? former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Ahmadinejad protege Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei ? did not make the cut by the Guardian Council, which vets all candidates. The reports indicated eight candidates were cleared from 686 hopefuls, some serious and many wild longshots.

The Guardian Council spokesman, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, told state TV that "names of qualified" candidates had been sent to the Interior Ministry but gave no other details.

The potential front-runners, according to the reports, represent a roll call of insiders with close ties to Khamenei, including former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili.

Any of the choices would create a possibly seamless front between the ruling clerics and presidency after years of political turmoil under Ahmadinejad, who tried to challenge the theocracy's vast powers to make all major decisions and set key policies. Iran's presidency, meanwhile, is expected to convey the ruling clerics' views on the world stage and not set its own diplomatic agenda.

While the election is not expected to bring major shifts in Iran's position on its nuclear program ? which Tehran insists is peaceful despite Western fears it could lead to atomic weapons ? it could open opportunities to renew stalled talks with a six-nation group that includes the U.S.

On Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araqchi said Iran's nuclear stance will "not change either before or after the election."

The possible ballot rejection of Mashaei brought little surprise.

He has been badly tarnished by Ahmadinejad's feuds with the ruling clerics. Hard-liners have denounced Mashaei as part of a "deviant current" that seeks to undermine the country's Islamic system ? which made ballot approval highly unlikely.

This would leave Ahmadinejad politically orphaned going into the final weeks in office. He still has significant public support and could try to bargain with other candidates or break away and start his own political movement.

Few powerful voices have come to Mashaei's defense in a sign of Ahmadinejad's fallen fortunes. But the case for Rafsanjani could be more complicated.

His surprise decision for a comeback bid ? 16 years after leaving office ? jolted hard-line foes and was cheered by beleaguered reformists and liberals after years of crackdowns.

Rafsanjani faced a barrage of attacks in the past week from powerful critics who suggested the 78-year-old does not have the stamina for the presidency and is disgraced for criticizing the heavy-handed tactics used to crush protests following Ahmadinejad's disputed re-election in 2009.

Rafsanjani's youngest daughter, Faezeh, was released from jail in March after serving a six-month sentence in connection with the postelection chaos. His middle son, Mahdi, also is to stand trial in coming weeks for his alleged role in the riots.

Late Monday, authorities closed down the Tehran headquarters of Rafsanjani's youth supporters.

But Rafsanjani also carries a legacy with a sweeping reach.

Moderates see him as a pragmatist who can deal deftly with the West and use his skills as patriarch of a family-run business empire to help repair Iran's economy, battered by sanctions and mismanagement. Others, even ideological foes, respect his high-profile role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution as the closest confidant of its spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

In a sign of possible lobbying on Rafsanjani's behalf, he received apparent support from some influential members of the Assembly of Experts ? the only group with the power to dismiss the supreme leader. Rafsanjani was pushed out as the group's chairman after failing to get enough support to leverage possible concessions from Khamenei on the 2009 postelection clampdowns.

One member, Ayatollah Mohieddin Haeri Shirazi, sent a letter to Khamenei saying "omitting a prominent figure from the election was incompatible" with giving wide choices to voters, the semiofficial ISNA news agency reported.

Another assembly member, Ayatollah Mohammad Vaez Mousavi, told the semiofficial ILNA news agency that Rafsanjani's age is not a weak point and many Iranian leaders "accepted responsibilities when they were quite old."

"The intensified defamation campaign against Rafsanjani means hard-liners are extremely afraid that he will win the vote," said prominent political analyst Saeed Leilaz. "Discrediting Rafsanjani doesn't work anymore. What matters today is who can save the country's economy; who has a plan to take Iran away from isolation and improve living conditions."

The Basics Of Affiliate Promotion In A Nutshell | Inner Badass Team ...

Affiliate marketing has roots in centuries of promotional techniques. It stands out from the ?quick and easy? attitude of online speedsters. Affiliate programs have been generating revenue for webmasters for a good number of years. When the lengthy history of affiliate promotion and the swift rate at which it continues to develop are taken into account, it becomes apparent that a wealth of information exists on the subject. No matter what stage of internet marketing you are in, this article provides helpful information to help with your success.

It?s a good idea to research how a business keeps track of orders not created through their web site when you?re looking through online marketing programs. You might lose commission if orders you directed to the company are made by mail or on the phone.

Carefully research any products that you are considering linking to before you actually do so. Doing the homework to determine how to organize affiliate links within your website may take a bit of time, but the effort is handsomely rewarded as the profits start to roll in.

There are many different options for partners in affiliate marketing and each has their own positives and negatives. Many of them are frustrating or confusing to navigate. A good affiliate marketer doesn?t allow a poor website to interfere with his business. You establish trust through this method and garner purchases.

Think about your target market when choosing affiliates. This also helps your audience clearly learn more about how you plan to provide them what they need, along with boosting your traffic.

Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular and effective ways to get results from your online business. There are other online advertising methods like contextual networks and banner advertising but affiliate programs will consistently generate more visitors to your site. When choosing an affiliate program, bear in mind the payment you receive for referrals, the popularity of the directory and its ease of navigation.

If you want to make a lot of money in your web marketing venture, go for companies that convert customers easily. Even a one percent conversion rate is good.

Banner ads can be used creatively to encourage more users to visit your webpage. Include an interesting trivia question in the ad and entice users to visit your website to find the answer. Curiosity will get the most out of a lot of individuals. You can encourage participation by giving discounts for winning answers.

Once you have determined which products you want to promote for your affiliate partner, you should ensure that your marketing strategy is directed toward the appropriate audience. Cheaper products are easy to make money based on higher volumes. For instance, selecting a rather expensive product will require you to focus on convincing customers more than working with volumes.

Lifetime commissions, in affiliate marketing, are now quite rare. Still, the rewards are very great. Vendors pay website owners for products sold from their referrals, of course. This is a typical commission arrangement. Be aware that commissions are paid out when customers make purchases during a specifically agreed upon time line. Lifetime commissions are a huge income stream, so they are still worth looking for.

Use a handwritten, scanned advertisement on your site. That personal touch will go a long way to connecting with potential buyers, because it will help them see the real person behind the products. If you dislike writing things by hand, or have illegible handwriting, hire a freelancer to help you create the ad.

Include all the media you can in your affiliate marketing efforts. Try adding screenshots or even videos of the product in action. People will want to buy your product because it is so appealing. Also, play to people?s love of technical details. Give plenty of specifics in your reviews so people can be confident about your product.

Your newsletter should be written in a style that will encourage people to join your email list. Not too long ago, people really enjoyed getting emails. Nowadays, with everyone jumping through hurdles to avoid spam, an informative and friendly newsletter can go a long way.

Boost your sales by ensuring your site has plenty of links, but also be sure that those links are relevant to the content being provided. If a person clicks on a link that says ?Apple iPad,? they will not be pleased if it leads to your page selling Verizon handsets. Any attempt to use cleverness or vagueness to lure visitors could backfire, and seem dishonest to your viewers.

Promote only products that you are confident about. What you recommend also as an effect on how customers view your business. By promoting only the best and most useful items, you?ll instill a sense of trust in your customers. You can keep customers if you promote good products and prices.

You need to make sure that you remain relevant if you wish to find success with internet marketing. It is important to stay current on new tools offered by your affiliate programs. Check out the constantly evolving tools that will draw customers into your web marketing goals.

One of the best ways to advertise if you are an affiliate marketer is to use the product and be proud of it. Writing about and putting product reviews on the web is a great way to display the usefulness of your product. Forums will also be a great place to expound upon your experiences with the products you sell. Every time you post something to the Internet, remember to include an affiliate link so that readers have a way to make purchases and bring you more sales.

Affiliate promotion is a good way to make money. Knowing how best to work these programs is key to reaping those profits.

Google Hangouts Has a Weird, Fun Multi-Cam Trick

So, Google's new Hangouts app keeps all of your chats in sync across all of your devices. Cool, right? But what if you're in a video call on your phone, and then open the same video call on your computer. Boop! Suddenly there's two of you, as I just discovered when chatting with my friend Bay.

You can now show two angles of yourself at the same time. Turn your head from one to the quickly for instant comedy. But why stop there? I pulled out my tablet, and yep, that worked, too. In the image above you can see there's three of me and two of him.

This may not have been an intentional Easter egg, but it's fun nonetheless. There might actually be a modicum of utility, even. You could continue to show your face, while you use the camera on your phone to show some project that you're working on. Or maybe it's so you can switch from one device to the other without having to hang up. Really, though, you're just going to use it to weird people out, and that's just fine. But watch out for audio feedback. It can be harsh.

VickGetty Images

With all the criticism Mike Vick has absorbed during his NFL career, you?d think he?d be used to it by now.

He apparently isn?t.

Earlier this week, Vick got a little testy during an interview with Mike Missanelli of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia on the topic of those who say he doesn?t read defenses quickly enough, and that he holds onto the ball for too long.

?I?m really tempted right now to just say no comment to that because like I said a second ago, you don?t last 12 years in the NFL not being able to read the defense,? Vick said, via Sheil Kapadia of PhillyMag.com.? ?Those people who are talking and saying that are just ignorant, and they know nothing about football.? Unless they turn on the film and watch my game and see what goes on, then they?ll replace those comments with the right comments.?

Missanelli pointed out that critics who know football have made those claims.? ?But it?s incorrect,? Vick said.? ?Without getting sensitive about it, it?s incorrect.? So I?d rather not talk about it.?

We?d hate to hear what Vick would say if he were sensitive about it.? (Actually, we?d probably love to hear it.)

Vick attributes the perception of holding the ball too long to the West Coast offense the Eagles ran under Andy Reid.? ?We had a lot of deeper throws last year, which required more time,? Vick said.? ?It?s just a big difference.?

New coach Chip Kelly?s system will result in quicker throws; if Vick can make them, he?ll likely be the starter.? Kelly also has taught Vick something unrelated to throwing the ball ? how to run with it, without fumbling.

?The other day, I broke out in the pocket, and the first thing Chip told me was to tuck the football,? Vick said.? ?So I showed him how I was running with it, and he looked at it and he knocked the ball right out of my hands.? And he was like, ?Hold it like this.?? And what he told me felt comfortable.? I had a tighter grip on the football. That should secure that problem as long as I work on it.?

It remains to be seen whether Vick will undergo a Tiki-style transformation when it comes to ball security.? But if he can get rid of the ball when he needs to and keep possession of it when he has to, Vick could have a big year in 2013.

Obama takes Cabinet secretaries out to play golf

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has taken two Cabinet secretaries out for a round of golf ? in the rain.

The White House said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (seh-BEEL'-yuhs) and outgoing Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood joined the president Saturday at Andrews Air Force Base. LaHood is running the Transportation Department until the Senate confirms Obama's choice of Charlotte, N.C., Mayor Anthony Foxx as successor.

Reporters saw Sebelius climb into the president's SUV before the motorcade left the White House. She's overseeing the president's health care law.

Before he got into the vehicle, Obama looked up at the grey sky with an outstretched hand. A steady rain was falling by the time he arrived about a half hour later.

White House assistant chef Sam Kass completes the foursome.

House chairman sees IRS errors as part of pattern

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Internal Revenue Service's improper use of tougher scrutiny of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status seems part of a broader pattern of intimidation and cover-ups by the Obama administration, a top House Republican said Friday.

The accusation by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., came as his panel held the first congressional hearing into the tax agency's improper targeting of tea party and other conservative groups. At a session that saw the IRS face harsh criticism from members of both parties, the just-ousted acting chief of the agency, Steven Miller, expressed regret for the heightened reviews.

"I want to apologize on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service for the mistakes that we made and the poor service we provided," Miller told the committee. "The affected organizations and the American public deserve better. Partisanship and even the perception of partisanship have no place at the Internal Revenue Service."

Miller conceded that "foolish mistakes were made" by IRS officials trying to handle a flood of applications for tax-exempt status. He said the process that resulted in conservatives being targeted, "while intolerable, was a mistake and not an act of partisanship."

Though Miller and another top IRS official are stepping down, Camp said that would not be enough.

"The reality is this is not a personnel problem. This is a problem of the IRS being too large, too powerful, too intrusive and too abusive of honest, hardworking taxpayers," Camp said.

Friday's hearing is the first of what are expected to be many on the subject by congressional panels. Underscoring the seriousness of the episode, Miller was sworn in as a witness, an unusual step for the Ways and Means panel and one that could put Miller in jeopardy if he is later shown to have misled lawmakers with his testimony.

Camp referred to a "culture of cover-ups and intimidation in this administration," but offered no other examples.

The administration has been forced on the defensive about last September's terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, and the government's seizure of The Associated Press' telephone records as part of a leaks investigation.

Republicans are hoping to link the issues in an effort to raise questions about President Barack Obama's credibility and make it harder for him to press a second-term agenda.

Camp's remark about cover-ups drew a sharp retort from the committee's top Democrat, Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan. Levin said if the hearing became a preview of the 2014 political campaigns, "we'll be making a very, very serious mistake."

Even so, Levin also was harshly critical of the IRS's treatment of conservative groups, saying the agency "completely failed the American people." He said Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that makes decisions about tax-exempt groups, should be "relieved of her duties."

Miller said the IRS struggled to efficiently handle growing numbers of applications for tax-exempt status.

The agency has said between 2008 and 2012, the number of groups applying for tax-exempt status as so-called social welfare groups more than doubled. Along with that was an increase in complaints that such groups were largely engaging in electoral politics, which is not supposed to be their primary activity.

"I do not believe partisanship motivated the people" at the IRS who engaged in the harsher screening for conservative groups, Miller said.

In recent months, Republicans on the Ways and Means panel had repeatedly asked the IRS about complaints from conservative groups that their applications were being treated unfairly.

On Friday, numerous Republicans wanted to know why Miller and others never told them the groups were being targeted, even after May 2012, when the IRS has said Miller was briefed on the practice. Miller was previously a deputy commissioner whose portfolio included the unit that made decisions about tax-exempt status.

"I did not mislead Congress or the American people," Miller told Rep. Charles Boustany Jr., R-La., one of several Republicans who challenged him about why he hadn't mentioned the targeting in the past.

Also testifying Friday was J. Russell George, the Treasury Department's inspector general for tax administration.

In a report he issued this week, George said IRS officials reported they were not politically pressured to target conservative groups. Asked about that conclusion, George said Friday, "We have no evidence at this time to contradict that assertion," but in prepared testimony to the committee he said he is continuing to investigate that question.

George's report concluded that the IRS office in Cincinnati, which screened applications for the tax exemptions, improperly singled out tea party and other conservative groups for tougher treatment. The report says the practice began in March 2010 and lasted more than 18 months.

The report blamed "ineffective management" for letting IRS officials craft "inappropriate criteria" to review applications from tea party and other conservative groups, based on their names or political views. It found that the IRS took no action on many of the conservative groups' applications for tax-exempt status for long periods of time, hindering their fundraising for the 2010 and 2012 elections.

Republicans have spent the past few days trying to link the IRS' improper scrutiny of conservatives to Obama. The president has said he didn't know about the targeting until last Friday, when Lerner acknowledged at a legal conference that conservative groups had been singled out.

Many of the groups were applying for tax-exempt status as social welfare organizations, which are allowed to participate in campaign activity if that is not their primary activity. The IRS judges whether that imprecise standard is met.

Attorney General Eric Holder has said the FBI was investigating whether the IRS may have violated applicants' civil rights.

Obama has rejected the idea of naming a special prosecutor to investigate the episode, saying the investigations by Congress and the Justice Department were sufficient.

Obama has named Daniel Werfel, a top White House budget officer, to replace Miller.

Also Thursday, Joseph Grant, one of Miller's top deputies, announced plans to retire June 3, according to an internal IRS memo. Grant is commissioner of the agency's tax exempt and government entities division, which includes the agents that targeted tea party groups for additional scrutiny.

Grant joined the IRS in 2005 and took over as acting commissioner of the tax exempt and government entities division in December 2010. He was just named the permanent commissioner May 8.

When asked whether Grant was pressured to leave, IRS spokeswoman Michelle Eldridge said Grant had more than 31 years of federal service and it was his personal decision to leave.

Foc.us headset claims to shock the brain for better gaming, we go forehead-on

Focus headset stimulates your brain, hones in on gaming foreheadon

We've seen a number of headsets tap into the mind, to geotag your mood, grant you remote control over gadgets or simply let you wiggle a pair of cat ears. None of those are quite like the foc.us, however, which serves up transcranial direct-current simulation (tDCS) -- a controversial form of neurosimulation that transmits current to a particular area of the brain. Originally used to help patients with brain injuries, tDCS has supposedly been found to increase cognitive performance in healthy adults. These claims haven't been proven yet though, and shocking your own cranium isn't exactly FDA approved.

Still, the foc.us is one of a few tDCS headsets designed for the consumer market and can, the inventor Michael Oxley claims, improve your working or short-term memory when the electrodes are placed on your prefrontal cortex. A low-intensity current is passed through the different nodes, exciting that part of the brain. Interestingly, Oxley is positioning it as a way to boost your video gaming prowess for the "ultimate gaming experience," a concept we found a little odd. That said, you don't actually have to wear the headset while shooting up bad guys or other brain-draining tasks. The idea behind the foc.us headset is to put it on your noggin, fire it up, and wait for around five to ten minutes, then take it off and go about your day. We did just that and all the gory details are after the break.

North Korea fires three short-range missiles

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea fired three short-range missiles from its east coast on Saturday, South Korea's Defence Ministry said, prompting Western powers to urge Pyongyang to exercise restraint.

Launches by the North of short-range missiles are not uncommon but, after recent warnings from the communist state of impending nuclear war, such actions raise concerns about the region's security.

"North Korea fired short-range guided missiles twice in the morning and once in the afternoon off its east coast," an official at the South Korean Defence Ministry spokesman's office said by telephone.

The official declined to speculate on whether the missiles had been fired as part of a drill or training exercise.

"In case of any provocation, the ministry will keep monitoring the situation and remain on alert," he said.

A Japanese government source noted the three launches, but said none of the missiles had landed in Japan's territorial waters, the Kyodo news agency reported.

Tension on the Korean peninsula has subsided in the past month, having run high for several weeks after the United Nations Security Council imposed tougher sanctions against Pyongyang following its third nuclear test in February.

The North had for weeks issued nearly daily warnings of impending nuclear war with the South and the United States.

The United States declined to comment directly on the reported launches but said it was monitoring the situation.

"We continue to urge North Korea to exercise restraint and take steps to improve its relations with its neighbors," the State Department and the Pentagon said in a statement.

Britain's Foreign Office said: "We have been clear to North Korea that its long-term interests will not be served by threatening the international community and increasing regional tensions."

North Korea conducts regular launches of its Scud short-range missiles, which can hit targets in South Korea.

It conducted a successful launch of a long-range missile last December, saying it had put a weather satellite into orbit. The United States and its allies denounced the launch as a test of technology that could one day deliver a nuclear warhead.

During the weeks of high tension, South Korea reported that the North had moved missile launchers into place on its east coast for the possible launch of a medium-range Musudan missile. The Musudan has a range of 3,500 km, putting Japan in range and possibly the U.S. South Pacific island of Guam.

Exclusive - U.S. approval of Tesoro BP refinery buy could come soon

By Clare Lovell AMSTERDAM, May 15 (Reuters) - Rafael Benitez wrote another line in his r?sum? on Wednesday, leading Chelsea to a 2-1 win over Benfica in the Europa League final, then underlined how tough the task had been. The Spanish coach is leaving after guiding the London side to a Champions League place next season and adding another piece of silverware to owner Roman Abramovich's bulging cabinet. "We have scored 145 goals and it's a record at the club. You have to win before people realise the job you are doing. So we won, and people may say 'yes, that's quite good'," he told reporters. ...

fh baby boomer homes What Empty Nesters are Looking for in a New Home When they Downsize Share on Facebook Tweet

The Baby Boomer Generation is the largest age group of our population. These retirees, or soon to be retirees, are also looking to downsize from their current homes, and looking to purchase or build ones that are specific to their new needs and lifestyles. These buyers are very specific in their desires and needs. I met recently with Realtor Simon Fitzpatrick with Simon Fitzpatrick Exceptional Properties?in Fairfield, CT. We spoke about the specific needs of this group of home buyers.

fh baby boomer home1 What Empty Nesters are Looking for in a New Home When they Downsize Share on Facebook Tweet

As these retirees pack up their large homes, many of which have seen the arrival of babies as well as the departure of these same babies, now all grown up and off to college or with families of their own, they will be wanting many of of their material possessions that will be traveling with them. So for this group, storage space is of the utmost importance. In this part of the country, a New York City suburb, the average size home desired by these retirees is roughly 2,500 ? 3,000 square feet. This number does vary in different parts of the county. This generation wants their space to feel contained, but manageable.

This is a wealthy generation. They have worked hard and saved well. Their retirement funds are healthy and they have money to spend on their new homes. Any income, however, generated from the sale of their past home, will not go towards the purchase of the new home. It will, instead be put towards their retirement accounts. For this generation of buyers, this home purchase is no longer for investment purposes. They want convenience and simplicity. They are looking for high end,?turnkey?homes.

fh baby boomer kitchen What Empty Nesters are Looking for in a New Home When they Downsize Share on Facebook Tweet

A well laid out kitchen and floor plan, for instance, are a must. Baby Boomers want updated homes, with new kitchens that boast high end finishes, and lots of counter and storage space. Granite counters and stainless steel appliances are hugely popular, as are open floor plans, where kitchens open up to family rooms. Because this generation grew up with dining rooms, they prefer those homes that have them.

fh master bedroom main level1 What Empty Nesters are Looking for in a New Home When they Downsize Share on Facebook Tweet

Master bedrooms on the first level, which is quite a rare find these days, are a must. Master bathrooms, as well as half or guest bathrooms on the main level are also in demand. These grandparents, or soon to be grandparents are also looking to buy a home that can?accommodate?their children and grandchildren, therefore they are still looking for the 3 to 4 bedroom home, with the guest rooms on the second floor. Often a spare bedroom is converted into a home office. Finished basements are also popular as a means for storage as well as a place for the children to play. Basements tend to be much more popular than attics, either walk-ups or pull downs.

fh baby boomer bathrooms What Empty Nesters are Looking for in a New Home When they Downsize Share on Facebook Tweet

Bathrooms need to be bright and showers are a must. As these retirees get older, getting in and out of bathtubs gets harder and harder. Additionally, a bathtub is needed in one of the bathrooms for young grandchildren. Master bathrooms should to be equipped with walk-in showers, the larger the better. Home builders might think about adding railings or handle bars as well. Storage space for linens and medicine is equally as important. These bathrooms should have generously sized linen closets, and as much above the sink storage as possible to alleviate the need to bend down, which can also get tougher with age.

This generation wants their homes to be problem-free; no mold, water or other potentially significant issues. Efficiency is also extremely important. Roofs should be new, as should windows, and the home should be well insulated. Where many do not want carpeting in their homes, the Baby Boomer generation does. It provides softness, warmth and is safer than the harder surfaces.

Wider hallways and doors, allowing for wheelchairs, are also a welcome feature. The fewer stairs, the better, as well. And, unless a condo or townhouse is new, with an elevator in place, they, as a general rule of thumb, will not work due to all the stairs required to get to the upper floors. This generation wants a garage, but doesn?t need a long driveway.

fh baby boomer pools What Empty Nesters are Looking for in a New Home When they Downsize Share on Facebook Tweet

Gated communities, and I do not necessarily mean retirement communities, are quite popular. Homes within these communities typically less property to maintain, which is a huge draw for this set. Often are the properties are maintained for them. These communities offer spacious living with enough privacy but without feeling too alienated. Patios and verandas are desired. In these communities, they can be with people of their own ilk and maintain a social life. These communities often have swimming pools, tennis courts and gymnasiums for those who find it important to keep fit.

fh baby boomers downtown What Empty Nesters are Looking for in a New Home When they Downsize Share on Facebook Tweet

Another important factor is location. Empty Nesters prefer to be in or close to town. The want easy access to culture and restaurants. They want to get out and enjoy themselves and live and active lifestyle without having to drive too far. School systems are not at all important to them, but medical access and hospital location often is.

Bankruptcy Protection Fund doesn't, err, protect bankrupts ...

ChristopherHolmes16513.jpg

Supposed financial saviour Christopher Holmes (above) refused to talk to us when we met him this week.

Which is a pity, because we wanted to ask him if he is able to afford his ?865,000 house because he gets other people chucked out of theirs.

His firms Consolidated Finance and Bankruptcy Protection Fund offer what look like lifelines, saying they can stop people who have been made bankrupt from being repossessed.

It's a big market, with 6,600 bankruptcies recorded from January to March this year alone.

"The Bankruptcy Protection Fund was set up to prevent people from losing their home as a result of bankruptcy," claims the firm, run from Manchester by 48-year-old Holmes.

"You will be able to keep all your assets including your house and your car."

The reality can be dreadfully different, as the Court of Appeal has laid bare.

It heard how Holmes's firms wanted to repossess the home of Tracy Collins of Hornchurch, Essex, who had been made bankrupt owing ?13,500.

She was then cold-called by ?Consolidated Finance which leant her enough to pay her debts and the bankruptcy was annulled.

But the condition was that she ?remortgaged her home and she now faced having to repay Consolidated.

Its shocking interest of 4% per month kicked in and her debt to Consolidated escalated to more than ?100,000, which she couldn't pay.

Because her loan from Consolidated was secured against her house, the firm went to court to get possession.

At first it succeeded, and also got permission to take the homes from three other "customers" who ended up owing far more to Consolidated than they ever owed in bankruptcy.

Thankfully the Court of Appeal has now overturned that judgment. Judge Sir Stanley Burnton said that the companies charged "extraordinarily high" interest rates to vulnerable customers.

Speaking of the predicament of Tracy Collins, he said that if she had been unable to pay the "relatively modest" sum that resulted in her bankruptcy then "the chances were that she would be unable to refinance the much greater sums that would be due to the ?companies, as indeed happened."

The consequence for Tracy and husband Innes: "They were likely to lose their home."

Judge Burnton added: "This was the very result that, according to the companies' literature, entering into the ?agreements with them would avoid."

He also had scathing words for Lupton Fawcett, the lawyers that Holmes's firms introduced to its customers.

He said: "It must, and certainly should, have been obvious to them the ?transactions with Mr and Mrs Collins were manifestly to their disadvantage.

"Mrs Collins was their client. I raise the question whether in such circumstances a solicitor can properly avoid a duty to advise his client by excluding that duty from his retainer, as Lupton Fawcett sought to do."

Of course she could have got proper advice elsewhere, though the judge pointed out that a bankrupt person might not be able to afford a second set of solicitors.

Lupton Fawcett - its mission statement says it likes "raising a few eyebrows" - said: "We are actively reviewing our historic role in these matters and any appropriate lessons will be acted upon."

Holmes would not comment when we met him as he left his home in Hale, Cheshire, where a Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Boxster were parked in the driveway.

His lawyers, Mishcon de Reya, said that the companies were appealing the Court of Appeal's decision. So for the likes of Tracy Collins and the other three sets of homeowners, the nightmare goes on.

The full Court of Appeal judgment can be found here. I would urge anyone thinking of doing business with Consolidated Finance or Bankruptcy Protection Fund to read it, especially paragraphs 55 to 59.

The two firms along with a third one, Alpha Mortgages Manchester Ltd, were in 2010 ordered by the Office of Fair Trading to improve their business practices. An investigation by the OFT found that they "had not been transparent in their dealings with customers and failed to adequately outline the risks involved". More here.

Reviewing, NES, and NoNES - The Contemplative Mammoth

Training in academia is often trial-by-fire, and learning how to review manuscripts is no exception. Because you?re technically not allowed to share manuscripts you?re reviewing with others, it can be especially tricky to learn how to do them (I do know some PI?s who share manuscripts with their grad students as a formal training exercise). Usually, you?ve read your own reviews before you have to write them, which is helpful. For me, the trickiest aspect of reviewing was not complicated methods, or figuring out how not to be a pit bull reviewer. Instead, I?ve struggled with what to do when I get a manuscript where I find myself paying more attention to the writing than the science.

If you?ve reviewed long, you?ve probably been assigned one of these. The sentences are often awkwardly phrased to the point of being distracting, and sections often read as though they were written by completely different people (often, I find that some paragraphs will be perfect, and others incomprehensible, which I think is really irresponsible on the part of co-authors who clearly wrote the well-edited sections but couldn?t be bothered to assist with the rest of the manuscript). Sometimes, the manuscripts unnecessarily aggressive language or overly confident statements with no supporting references. Often (though by no means always), these papers are written by non-native English speakers. Native English speakers (NES) can be guilty of all of the above as well, but I?d like to focus on non-native English speakers (NoNES) folks for the purposes of this post..

In many Twitter discussions, I?ve run across a mix of opinions on what to do when you have a poorly written NoNES article. Some are of the opinion that we should edit these manuscripts, as a professional courtesy? or even that it?s our job as reviewers. Others point out that we?re not copyeditors, but should focus on the science; journal guidelines usually mention something about what to do when you?re an NoNES scholar submitting a paper, like using one of a number of third-party editing services that specialize in English language editing.

Ideally, NoNES should find a colleague or friend who is a NES speaker with excellent writings skills to give a friendly review? I?ve done this, and have found it to be a nice compromise. As an article reviewer, if a paper is otherwise excellent but suffers from a need for thorough copy-editing, I may put in the work of revising. If the paper suffers from other flaws, I?ll typically make a comment to the effect of ?This paper requires extensive copy-editing, as in this paragraph,? and then demonstrate with heavy edits as an example.

I?ve had ESL colleagues bemoan this practice, however, especially when examples aren?t present. ?Awkward wording, rephrase? can be incredibly unhelpful without guidance as to how to rephrase. Additionally, as this TREE paper points out, publishing in the sciences is ?monolithically dominated by English,? and NES speakers could be more supportive and compassionate of their NoNES colleagues, particularly given the fact that we?re in a position of privilege when it comes to language and publishing. Still, most of us aren?t trained copyeditors, and a reviewer may not necessarily be a great writer. I think that the ideal situation would be to use a professional editor of you?ve got access to the funds, or to go with a friendly reviewer.

What?s your policy when a NoNES manuscript arrives in your inbox? If you?re an NoNES , what are your thoughts or experiences about the revision process? If you?re an editor, what would you like to see from your authors and reviewers?

Bluetooth 4.0 support comes to the Nexus 4, might be headed to stock Android too

LG Nexus 4 with Bluetooth 40 support shows up on Bluetooth SIG

The five-month-old LG Nexus 4 just showed up on the Bluetooth SIG for a second inspection. The SIG's site appears to be down right now, but TechTastic took a screen grab which lists the revised handset as supporting Bluetooth 4.0. This is interesting, because up until now the Android Open Source Project hasn't supported this Bluetooth spec or its Low Energy mode, meaning that the original Nexus 4 couldn't use it despite having the necessary hardware. Judging by the appearance of this SIG listing, Bluetooth 4.0 support for stock Android could be announced at I/O later today. Oh, and while we're on the subject of a potentially updated Nexus 4, there have been more sightings of a white version in Dubai (shown above). Ripe for another I/O giveaway?

Update: The SIG is back up, so we've added it as a source link below.

Solid Home Improvement Advice For Anyone To Follow

An excellent home improvement job. Home improvements add both beauty and livability to a home, they can also increase your home's resale value. Improving your home should be a good way to enjoy making money. Here are a few suggestions to get the best bang for your home improvement project.

You may need to repaint your porch. Use paint that is good quality.

Small rooms can look dark and dull, but they don't have to be.You can invite the proper amount of light.A room will instantly look larger when there is ample natural light. Your small room will seem much more spacious quickly.

Put nail holes in the rim of paint can's rim. Use a nail to create a few holes in order to solve this doesn't happen.

You can create an appealing and unique bookcase to make it look more appealing. Choose a design that's unique and eye catching. If you apply wallpaper to a bookcase's back, the design shows as a backdrop to your books when they are lined up on the shelves. This tip can give your bookcase a good design and it will also act as a visually appealing focal point in any room.

Install motion detectors in the front entrance of your home. You can lower your electric bill since the lights only turn on when necessary. Motion detectors can detect thieves at bay.

Install peepholes on your outside doors. Know who is outside before you open your door. Installing a peephole is a snap and one of the best safety improvements there is. All you will need is a good drill and some extra time. A peephole will give you some peace of reassurance when someone is knocking at your door.

Use natural materials for your design elements if your budget will possibly allow it. Natural building products like wood, ceramic or stone are almost always superior to synthetic alternatives. They are far more durable and attractive than man-made alternatives. The most costly natural materials may be less expensive over time because they will last longer.

If your project utilizes brick, always purchase extra ones to use as needed. It is next to impossible to get a good color match if there are needed repairs need to be done. The design of bricks changes frequently.

Consider installing a shower in at least one bathroom if none of your existing bathrooms currently have one.A shower is better when you have children and is much more accessible than a bathtub.A five-minute shower will use a quarter of the water that a bath will.

Don't let a contractor trick you into using their services when they can complete projects in a super quick time. Contractors often have a number of reasons to finish a job quickly. They might hurry the workers so they get onto other jobs more quickly.

This will give your home's exterior curb appeal and can add additional square footage.

You should never underestimate the project that you are doing. This will allow you to deal with anything that comes your way.

Some of the kinds of siding you can use is foam, rigid form insulation, and complete wall systems.

The initial step in any good driveway is to keep it clear of debris and clean it regularly.

This prevents moisture from touching the drywall.

Cleaning out your gutters is a great project that requires little time but has lasting impact. Clogged gutters can reduce the efficiency of your home and cause a fascia board. This might cause the wood to deteriorate. Maintaining clean gutters is a wise home improvement chore.

There is a easy way to reduce the energy consumption in your home.

Reuse whatever you can when doing home improvement project as a means to help save money. Why not paint cabinets to update their look? Replace the handles and knobs on them also to update their look.

New carpet is a great project that is going to change the feel and look of your home. Make sure you do some comparison shopping concerning style, style and type of carpet.Ask the store if they have samples to bring home so you can take home.

Throw away all of your clutter before beginning a project. Your life will be more organized and generally easier without a lot of junk.

If you're planning on painting a room, put down a drop cloth to protect the flooring.People often don't realize how hard it is to remove dry paint from carpet and other flooring.

If your central heat and air system is more than seven years of age, it is probably time to consider an update. Some central heating systems can cut down the amount of energy you use by up to 20%. Newer models often operate more silent as compared to older ones.

Granite tile is preferable over a slab. A granite countertop made out slab is going to cost you in the thousands. You may be able to cover the same area with good quality granite tiles that only cost a few hundred dollars and it will look just as wonderful. You can take the money you saved and be able to spend it on something else.

After a homeowner has successfully completed a few home improvement projects and enjoyed their tangible benefits, confidence grows, which can sometimes encourage more ambitious projects. This is a good thing. Learning a little about home improvement goes a long way. It helps a person build the confidence to take on even more complex projects and increases the resale value of the home.

Bill Gates talks about his last visit with Steve Jobs, and a cancelled dinner!

Bill Gates was recently interviewed for television, and while the main focus was the work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the late Steve Jobs also got a mention. I don't want to spoil it for you, but in the clip above from CBS News' 60 Minutes, Gates emotionally talks about his last visit with Jobs, and how they talked about how education hasn't really been improved by technology yet.

The visit was also the subject of an interview with Walter Issacson for the Steve Jobs Biography. Gates also recalls how Jobs was engrossed in the construction of his super-yacht, Venus, and how he looked forward to spending time upon it.

And, on the subject of a cancelled dinner invitation that had been extended to Jobs, he called up Gates and said to his secretary:

"If he wants to know why, just tell him I'm an A*****e"

Enjoy, and be sure to share your thoughts with us.
