DETROIT (WWJ)?- A new Center for Disease Control study finds that bread is the number one source for salt in the American diet, accounting for more than twice as much sodium as salty junk food like potato chips.
WWJ?Newsradio 950?s Marie Osborne spoke with one local dietician who says there is no need to give up bread.
William Beaumont Hospital?Dietician, Barbara Main says the bread isn?t bad for you, the problem is we eat too much of it.
She says bread can be nutritious but you?ve got to choose the right ones, like whole grain breads.
Main says?there are ways to combat high salt intake.
?Focus on the fresh, look at fresh fruits and vegetables?or in our case in the winter time more often frozen fruits vegetables that don?t have added sodium,? said Main.
Reading labels is key says Main, even the same foods by different manufacturers can vary in the amount of salt. ? ?You can go anywhere from 200 ? 300 mg a serving in one brand of soup to 800- 1000 mg a serving in another brand of soup,? said Main.
Other foods on the top ten sodium list:?cold cuts and cured meats, pizza, fresh and processed poultry, soups, sandwiches, cheese, pasta dishes and snacks.
Common sense tactics like eating a balanced diet and tasting food before you lay on the salt are always good ideas.
