Gaydar radio talks about gay and lesbian parenting options ...

Gaydar Radio interviewed Sarah Wood-Health from Natalie Gamble Associates on Saturday morning about same sex parenting and the options and pitfalls for gay and lesbian parents starting a family.
Talking to Neil and Debbie on the Saturday morning breakfast show (as Britain?s answer to Ally McBeal!), Sarah explained how surrogacy works for gay fathers, and the differences between a surrogacy arrangement in the UK or abroad.

Careful planning is the best way of avoiding legal problems, especially for gay dads planning international surrogacy, given the immigration issues and the fact that UK law won?t recognise a foreign birth certificate naming you both as the parents.

Sarah was also asked about the options for lesbian couples, discussing the pros and cons of using a known or unknown sperm donor, and the need to set things up in the right way.

Although the law has become much more gay-friendly in the last few years, so much is still so untested, including what happens where relationships break down and who has rights and parental status when gay or lesbian parents break up or get divorced.

The good news is that there are so many options available now for same sex couples and single gay and lesbian parents ? adoption and co-parenting are also on the list. While the law still has a little way to go, it is evolving to try and keep up and it is now much easier for same sex couples or singles to find a way to start a family.

It?s just a question of knowing your options and making an informed decision so you make the right choice for you. With good advice it needn?t be complicated.

Rick Ayers: Some Anti-war Reflections on Memorial Day

Across the country this memorial day, in parks and at parades, before sporting events and at graduation ceremonies, the hypocrisy of paunchy old men extolling the glories of warfare was on obscene display. And President Obama's performance at the Vietnam Memorial Wall was another pathetic case of pandering to an idiotic narrative of a military establishment bent on creating a state of permanent war.

A few crucial points must be reiterated:

The opposition to the Vietnam War was not some unfeeling hippies who disrespected the troops. By the 1970's, the heart and soul of the anti-war movement was the veterans and the active duty GI's. Slowly, over the years, the warmongers have tried to rewrite that history into a lie about the poor veteran and the unfeeling peaceniks. The researcher Jerry Lembcke, by the way, looked into every reported story of GI's being spat upon when arriving home and found not one single credible case. See his book The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory, and the Legacy of Vietnam.

Nevertheless, while we in the anti-war movement love our veterans (certainly more than the Veteran's Administration which is criminal in its neglect and disgusting in its avoidance of diagnoses of PTSD) we cannot soften what they did (in Vietnam or Iraq or Afghanistan) with terms like "service." At its best, the Vietnam anti-war veterans were not just talking about how hard it was on them but they were coming to terms with the horrors of what they did over there. Yes, the ones who should be held accountable should be the top brass and the politicians. But everyone in this life has moral responsibility for his or her actions -- even if they are done under horrible circumstances. We certainly maintain that standard when considering German soldiers in World War II. Following orders is not a legal excuse. And certainly the lowest infantrymen should not be punished but they do have some moral reflection to do.

Which brings me to this horrid logic of the public discourse on war. Every politician, of any stripe, insists that they honor the soldiers for fighting. Honor them. Because they showed valor. And patriotism. Even when the war was wrong, dead wrong, we must honor their "service." What we get into here is a logical fallacy of death justifying death. Yes, the Iraq war was criminal, based on manufactured evidence, seeking the expansion of empire, creating an exponential increase in the number of terrorists, slaughtering 600,00 civilians, leading to 20 GI suicides a day, and wrecking the world economy. It has been an obscenity and the NATO-US war on Afghanistan is just an extension of the obscenity. Since no one any more can argue for these policies, they argue that we must honor the dead. They have done something marvelous, we are told. And those who were right, who opposed the war? Riffraff.

While we are looking at the big picture, let's admit that we have turned away from a universal or even selective draft system so that the war does not touch the privileged. The U.S. now sends its poor and working class youth to fight the wars so that life can go on in the privileged communities with no real pain or consequence. Young people rush to the military to escape the bloody streets of their communities, which are ravished by drugs, unemployment, and prisons. They are escaping an economy that has completely marginalized them and schools that are useless in solving their problems. They go to prison if they join gangs in their communities but are welcomed into the biggest and most violent gang of all, the U.S. military. Then they are held up as heroes by the very ones who put them in the predicament that got them killed.

This is the kind of death's head war culture we saw in the Roman legions in the last century of that empire. And it is the kind of mindless patriotism that has shamed and degraded our country.

Let us honor veterans by speaking the truth. They are tough enough to take it. And the veterans, who were tricked into fighting a criminal war by the lies of recruiters, deserve better than to be used once again as rallying points for the recruitment of new cannon fodder.

What you should know about college financial aid | Medill ...

by Mara Grbenick, Medill News Service for Marketwatch on 05/29/12

WASHINGTON?President Barack Obama opposes a push by Congress to double the 3.4 % interest rate on federal Stafford student loans, but Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of Fastweb.com and Finaid.org, has a different message: Let the? rate expire in July as currently mandated and increase funding for Pell Grants, which help make college attainable for the neediest students in America.

The U.S. is in a brains race, Kantrowitz says, and, to stay competitive, should devote substantially more resources to smart people? who can?t afford college.

In a recent conversation, Kantrowitz offered his take on federal education loan policy and his best advice for students and parents.

What frustrates you most about how the college aid process works?

The financial aid system, which includes the financial aid application, the methods for evaluating financial need and the types of aid available, is too complicated. Neither the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) nor the College Board?s CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE Form take into consideration consumer debt held by the student or parents. Student loan debt is also not treated as offsetting to assets or income and consequently the need analysis overstates ability to pay. ?

There are three college savings plans: 529 College Savings Plans, Prepaid Tuition Plans and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts. There are three education tax benefits: Hope Scholarship Tax Credit (also known as the American Opportunity Tax Credit), Lifetime Learning Tax Credit and Tuition and Fees Deduction.? And there are also too many student aid programs: For example, there are five different federal loan programs ? Perkins, Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford, Parent Plus, consolidation loans ? and they all have different interest rates. It?s too much choice for most people and makes the true cost of college hard to know.

What should students really look for in their college aid award letters?

In financial aid award letters, colleges often describe loans as reducing college costs, which is, of course, misleading, because loans do just the opposite?they increase your costs. Also, there?s an important distinction between the net cost, the term used in award letters, and the true cost of college. The net cost of college is the total cost of attendance minus the financial aid package, which may include a variety of student loans.

I routinely hear from students who believe they are getting a free ride because the net cost is zero. The net cost is usually the same or similar to the expected family contribution, which may be zero for low-income students. When I look at their financial aid award letters I see thousands of dollars of student loans and tens of thousands of dollars of Parent PLUS loans. That isn?t a free ride.

What should the goals be on a national level to improve financial aid policy?

In the United States we are not adequately investing in our greatest resource?students. Public policy can be based on a variety of goals, such as increasing the number of college-capable low-income students who can enroll in and graduate from college or keeping the U.S. strong in fields that are going to be strategically important (e.g., science, technology, engineering and math) by rewarding academic merit in those fields. Finally, encouraging college graduates to become teachers in those areas will help educate the next generation so public service loan forgiveness should be a part of the policy.

More money for loans means less money for grants. Cutting direct investment in education will ultimately hurt us as a nation. The benefits of this investment are not private. Not only do college graduates earn incomes that are 70 to 80 % higher than high school graduates, but bachelor?s degree recipients also pay more than double the federal income tax.

Why have the interest rates on some federal student loans remained high even though interest rates for other things like cars are quite low? The Direct PLUS loan for Parents is 7.9 % plus a 4 % origination fee. The government makes money on it.

The rates are overall a pretty good deal. When you buy a car, the loan is secured with the car. When you buy a house, the mortgage is secured by the home. If you default on a federal student loan, the government cannot repossess your education. Federal student loans are also higher risk, since they are not credit underwritten. Federal student loans have fixed rates, while most other forms of consumer debt have variable rates, rates that have nowhere to go but up. This is why if you fail to pay your student loans, your wages or even Social Security checks could be garnished up to 15 %.

The interest rate doesn?t matter while you?re in school. It only affects the cost of college after you graduate. Remember that interest rates are unusually low right now because the Federal Reserve is suppressing increases in interest rates through 2014. If interest rates follow past patterns, they will eventually begin to rise by about the same amount they dropped at the start of the credit crisis. Federal student loans have fixed rates, which over time will cost less.

It?s an election year so there?s more talk about education policies that appeal to voters in the short-term, but what do you think the U.S. needs to do in the long-term?

We are no longer in an arms race, but in a brains race. We need a national priority of investing in people. The U.S. doesn?t have a monopoly on talent. We?ve invested in our native ingenuity [in the past], but we can?t slack off. The U.S. has the best system, but it?s only a matter of time before other countries start catching up. ?

Student aid policy over the past several decades has focused mainly on maintaining the status quo. While the total dollar amount of funding has increased, the average amount of funding per student has declined on a constant dollar basis. There has not been any bold new investment in postsecondary education. What would happen if we were to increase investment in the Pell Grant program from $30 billion a year to $100 billion? This would dramatically increase the number of college graduates, switching us from a downward spiral to a new renaissance of business and technological leadership. Even people who don?t have kids going to college would benefit because higher federal income tax revenue from the college graduates would allow Congress to maintain or expand current programs without any tax increases. There are 3 million jobs unfilled because we don?t have enough college graduates with the right skills to fill them.

What?s your best advice to students and parents who are trying to make a good decision for college?

?

  1. Start saving as soon as possible for college. The earlier you start, the better off you?ll be and the more flexibility you?ll have in making your decision. The greatest asset is time. If you start saving from birth, about a third of the college savings goal will be achieved from earnings rather than from contributions to savings. If you start saving when the child enters high school, only about 10% will come from earnings. Also start searching for scholarships early. Every dollar you save or win is about a dollar less you?ll have to borrow to pay for school. The more you can save or receive in grants, the more freedom you have to choose your ideal school.
  2. Minimize your debt. Before you incur debt, figure out how you will repay it. The total student loan debt you will take on should be less than your expected annual starting salary. Federal loans provide alternate repayment plans like extended repayment and income-based repayment, but those have consequences like more interest. The longer you are in debt, the more difficulty you will face in meeting other financial goals.
  3. Compare college costs based on net price. This is the truer measure of cost and affordability. The net price is the cost of attendance minus just grants and scholarships. The remaining amount is how much money you need to pay from savings, income or loans.
  4. Also consider graduation rates and other measures of college quality. Is your chosen field of study offered at the university and how strong is the program? Those students that are driven to do well will do well no matter where they go, but talented and driven students tend to matriculate in schools where the graduation rate is high. (It is unclear whether this is due to the value added by the elite colleges or whether the elite colleges merely aggregate the most talented students.) Given the tradeoffs between college affordability and college quality, it is often worthwhile to enroll at a lower-cost college, such as an in-state public college.
  5. Know how much debt you are really going to end up with and calculate the monthly loan payment. There are online tools for this. Think about the life goals you have and how those payments will affect your ability to meet those goals. Will you need a car? Do you want to save for a house or your children?s education? When evaluating college costs, make the cost of your loans tangible and specific.

Len Levitt: Where Was Cy?

Why didn't Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance attend Police Commissioner Ray Kelly's momentous news conference last Thursday on the Etan Katz case?

Kelly announced that a suspect the public had never heard of -- Pedro Hernandez, a worker in a bodega near where 6-year-old Etan disappeared -- had been arrested after confessing to Etan's 1979 murder, and implied the case was solved.

Sources say Kelly had expressly invited [some say strong-armed] Vance to the news conference while excluding the FBI, which had worked with the NYPD for decades on the Patz case.

While at his news conference Kelly indicated that Hernandez's admission had ended the 33-year-old hunt for Etan's killer, Bureau officials remain skeptical, the sources said.

The FBI had expressed similar doubts about Kelly's trumpeted arrests in two recent terrorism cases involving so-called "lone wolves," distancing itself from both.

In each case, the so-called lone wolves -- Ahmed Ferhani and Mohamed Mamdouh in the first case, and Jose Pimentel in the second -- were indicted by Vance in state court because the FBI did not consider any of the suspects to be serious terrorism threats.

At each news conference, announcing their arrests, it was Vance, not the FBI., who stood at Kelly's side.

By choosing not to appear with Kelly at last week's news conference, Vance, too, appeared to express doubts.

His absence was all the more noticeable, considering the last line of Kelly's press statement, announcing Hernandez's arrest and confession: "We are working very closely with the Manhattan district attorney."

A top city law enforcement official said that Vance's reluctance to attend Thursday's news conference may also be related his re-election in 18 months and his attempt to avoid a repeat of another headline-grabbing case in which he followed the NYPD's lead -- his premature arrest last year of Dominque Strauss-Kahn.

Shortly after the NYPD pulled DSK off a Paris-bound plane, following his encounter with a maid in the Sofitel Hotel, Vance charged him with sexual abuse and attempted rape -- only to drop the charges because of subsequent doubts about the maid's credibility.

Instead, without Vance, Kelly had S. Andrew Schaffer, the NYPD's deputy commissioner of Legal Matters at the news conference, apparently to give Hernandez's arrest a legal imprimatur.

Schaffer was a silent prop. As with all Kelly news conferences, only the commissioner spoke for the department.

Sources also say that Vance is seeking to ensure that the FBI remains involved in the case.
Just a month ago, the Bureau dug up a Soho basement near where Etan disappeared, but failed to find evidence implicating another suspect.

After Hernandez's arrest, FBI agents attended case meetings at Vance's office along with the NYPD, sources say.

"The impression I am getting is that Vance wants the FBI involved even if it's only to raise his comfort zone with the investigative steps that remain before going to a grand jury," the source said.

Furthermore, sources say that neither the DA's office nor the FBI helped interrogate Hernandez in Camden, New Jersey. The interrogation, which led to a confession, was an exclusive NYPD affair.

The problem with Hernandez's confession and arrest, say law enforcement officials, is not that the police arrested him prematurely. As NYPD spokesman Paul Browne pointed out, once Hernandez confessed, detectives had no other choice than to arrest him.

Rather, the problem is Kelly's never-ending penchant for publicity and self-promotion [to say nothing of diverting people from his much-criticized Stop and Frisk and Muslim spying policies].

For in the Patz case, Hernandez's arrest is not the final step but only the beginning.
Hernandez's history of mental illness means that his confession, by itself, is not enough to indict, much less to convict.

"I have a bad feeling," said retired NYPD Lieu. Commander Vernon Geberth, the author of a definitive textbook on homicide.

"You need more than a confession. You need a body. You need forensic evidence. And there is none."

Kelly's statement at his news conference implied otherwise. Referring to Hernandez's confession and arrest Kelly said, "We can only hope that these developments bring some measure of peace to the family."

WHAT THE POST KNOWS. According to the New York Post, the NYPD has secret information never made public that only the killer knows. And 30 years ago, Hernandez told this to detectives, who blew him off.

This is startling.

"Pedro Hernandez provided detectives with 'intimate details' about the murder of Etan Patz that only the killer could have known," the Post reported.

Sources told the Post that "investigators were stunned to learn that Hernandez had this inside information, which cops never disclosed to the public despite intense public scrutiny and three decades of frustration in trying to unravel what happened to the 6-year-old in 1979."

"The specifics have remained secret and are known by fewer than a dozen current law-enforcement officials, including Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance, the sources said." [Question: if this inside information was so great, why wasn't Vance at the news conference?]

Then, the Post said this: "Meanwhile Kelly was said to be furious with the way the investigation into Hernandez was initially handled."

"He's upset and wants to know... Kelly is pissed. The heat is on."

Given the Post's reputation for, shall we say, exuberance, let's see how this all holds up.

THE LONDON CONNECTION. So there was Kelly in London, announcing Hernandez' arrest before barreling back to New York to hold his news conference.

How long was he in London? Nobody knows as Kelly refuses to make public his schedule, citing "security" concerns.

Two English newspapers reported last week that Kelly had been in London, advising authorities about security for the upcoming Olympics. Did they invite him? Or was he there on his own? More interestingly: who paid for his trip?

MORE MIKE. A day after the announcement of Hernandez's arrest, the Daily News' Mike Lupica was already slobbering over Kelly, this time writing that as a young cop, Kelly, apparently off-duty, had visited the block where Etan disappeared:

He was working vice in those days, back in 1979, in what they called the 'Public Morals Division' at the NYPD. He was back from Vietnam and he was a young cop with two young children -- ages 11 and 13. So he was both a parent in the city and a policeman when Etan Patz disappeared on his way to school.

Let's see. That visit would be a couple of years after Kelly walked a beat in Harlem and supposedly befriended a young Al Sharpton, who was then attending school in Brooklyn. Apparently, the future Rev was playing a lot of hooky those days, hanging around Harlem enough to become pals with Kelly.

Let's hope that Lupica's description of Kelly has more credibility than that Paul Browne-spun fairytale.

SHOT CLOCK STILL TICKING. With all the brouhaha over the Patz case, let's not forget Kelly's ticking time bomb, which so far he has successfully defused.

That's his commission to examine whether the downgrading of crime statistics is a city-wide problem.

Kelly formed the commission after police broke into the apartment of whistle-blower cop Adrian Schoolcraft, then took him against his will to the psych ward of Jamaica Hospital after Schoolcraft claimed that commanders in his Brooklyn precinct were systemically downgrading crimes. Spokesman Browne estimated at the time that the commission's report would be completed within six months. It's now more than two years. One of the three commissioners has already died.

For the record, the report is 697 days late.

Microsoft server and tool upgrades demand CIOs' attention

By Juan Carlos Perez, Chris Kanaracus

May 25, 2012 10:03 AM ET

IDG News Service - CIOs and IT directors tracking the barrage of major upgrades for Windows and Office also need to stay tuned to the refresh cycle for Microsoft's servers and tools, including Windows Server 2012, SQL Server 2012, System Center 2012 and Visual Studio 11.

The 2012 version of Windows Server, the version of Windows that runs on enterprise and data center servers, is "quite possibly the most significant release of Windows Server ever," packing hundreds of new and improved features in areas like virtualization, networking, storage, user experience and scripting, according to Microsoft.

IDC analyst Al Gillen believes it will be "a dynamite product."

"We don't normally use superlatives like that, but from what we've seen, based on what's going to be included, such as the new release of Hyper-V, and together with System Center 2012, Microsoft has a very attractive package," Gillen said. Windows Server 2012 is in beta, while System Center 2012 became generally available in April.

Gillen foresees a popular scenario in which customers choose Windows Server 2012 as a virtualization host for their Windows software infrastructure.

"That scenario allows customers to get Windows Server 2012 and its benefits into their organizations very quickly, and it also keeps them from having to deal with a lot of porting, migration and testing of the apps, because they can take these apps, whatever they are, and virtualize them in the Windows Server 2012 environment," he said.

There will also be take-up of the product, albeit at a slower pace, as a formal migration upgrade for Windows Server 2003 and 2008, which will require more time-consuming compatibility testing, he said.

On the enterprise database front, SQL Server 2012, which was released in final form at the beginning of April, features improvements in application availability, in data warehouse and data analysis performance, in data visualization and presentation, in data integration and management, and in tools for application and database developers, according to Microsoft.

Industry analyst Curt Monash from Monash Research calls SQL Server 2012 "basically adequate" for a variety of scenarios especially for organizations where the Microsoft database is already the primary one, and a "good choice" in particular for OLTP (online transaction processing) jobs.

"If you just want to put up a little database for a small project that depends a lot on your organization's Microsoft skillset, it might be easier to use SQL Server," he said.

However, if a company isn't tied to the Microsoft software stack, there are better choices for analytics, like Sybase IQ; data warehousing, like Teradata; and website tasks, like MySQL and NoSQL, he said.

Equitable Life of Canada uses SQL Server for all of its databases except for one. It mostly uses SQL Server 2000, but it also has SQL Server 2008.

Lady Gaga Cancels Concert In Indonesia | Music News, Reviews ...

Lady Gaga called off her sold-out concert in Jakarta, Indonesia, in the latest setback in the Asian segment of her Born This Way Ball tour. The cancellation of the June 3 show followed a public outcry by?Islamist hard-liners, who had voiced objections to Gaga?s revealing costumes and the show?s suggestive choreography.

But after Gaga?s camp evidently refused requests from local?police to tone down the performance in order to receive the necessary permits, the scrapping of one of the biggest dates on the tour seemed inevitable. ?I?m so very sorry to the fans & just as devastated as you if not more. You are everything to me?,?Gaga tweeted. A few of her fans in Jakarta, however, decided the show must go on, in a way.

Michael Rusli, head of concert promoter Big Daddy, announced that full refunds would be offered to Gaga fans, though that didn?t offer much solace to little monsters like 25-year-old Johnny Purba, who told the Associated Press that the cancellation ?only shows to the world how weak security forces are in this country, how police are afraid of a bunch of hard-liners. Gaga?s show, he added, posed no threat to Indonesia?s Muslim community. ?For God?s sake, she is not a terrorist!?

Several dozen Gaga fans, however, carried on by staging their own look-a-like contest and flash mob at the EX shopping mall in Jakarta.

Though news of Gaga?s concert cancellation apparently broke before or during the spontaneous party, local fan Simon Sibarani, 19, told The Jakarta Post that ?the show must go on?. The fans performed two extensive routines to a medley of Gaga hits, including ?Just Dance?, ?Judas? and ?Born This Way?.

Though Sibarani noted he felt ?bitter? over the fact that Gaga pulled the plug on her performance, he and other fans may yet receive some consolation prize. Gaga tweeted to her Jakarta fans that she would ?try to put together something special for you.?

What does the cancellation of Gaga?s Indonesian concert say about the power of pop worldwide? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter or in the comments.

What Homeowners Should Expect From Roof Replacement Project

A roof replacement project is crucial, as it helps homeowners to maintain their homes. A roof, which is damaged or not maintained properly can give rise to number of problems for an owner. The problem can heighten, if other parts of a home are effected. Small damages can be fixed by contractors, but when damages cannot be repaired, the roof should be replaced. Patrick not looking back at what she left behind

(AP) ? With Danica Patrick in North Carolina racing stock cars, the Indianapolis 500 will go off on Sunday without an American woman in the field for the first time since 1999.

That's just one of the problems facing her former series, but it's not really her problem.

Patrick has moved on to NASCAR, and can't worry about what she left behind.

"I was ready to leave IndyCar. I wanted to be here," she said from Charlotte Motor Speedway, where she'll race in Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600.

"When you are not missing something, longing for something, you don't really think about it that much. It's like that girlfriend you didn't want to have anymore. You don't think about her anymore. Or ex-husband. You just don't. Indy, I have lots of great memories from there and probably the part of me that doesn't feel quite as longing for it is that there is still a chance that I could do it again. It's not gone."

It makes for a strange situation this weekend regarding Patrick.

She's not in Indianapolis for the first time in seven years, but she's still been a topic of conversation at various points since the track opened May 9.

James Hinchcliffe, her replacement in the Go Daddy car, flirted with the pole and will start second in Sunday's race. It's been a breakthrough month for Hinchcliffe, who is started to build his own brand and establish his identity as both a colorful character and a skilled driver.

It had been hard in IndyCar for drivers to emerge from Patrick's shadow as she dominated the media spotlight. It exploded in 2005, when she finished fourth in her Indy debut and actual winner Dan Wheldon felt compelled to have a T-shirt made that said "Actually 'Won' The Indy 500" to poke fun at the attention Patrick was receiving.

The series has struggled to develop stars since and her departure creates the overdue opportunity.

"You've got so many other guys in here that deserve a chance, that have a story or have a personality," said Graham Rahal. "If she were here, you probably wouldn't be talking to any of them. It's good for all the other guys to get a chance at it now."

In NASCAR, Patrick is embraced throughout the industry and welcomed in the garage by drivers willing to help her adjust. Everyone recognizes that Patrick brings more exposure to NASCAR, and the 6 percent increase ESPN has seen in its Nationwide Series ratings this season has got to be at least partially because of her.

So in that sense, IndyCar's loss in NASCAR's gain.

"Danica brought a lot of interest from people that were not really involved in racing," said former Indianapolis 500 winner Eddie Cheever, an analyst for ABC's race day broadcast. "My daughter follows Danica Patrick, whether she's racing here or somewhere else. But there are a lot of very talented drivers in IndyCar, and I think the series will just pick up and keep on going forward."

Cheever's daughter is just one example of the reach Patrick has with casual sports fans and young girls. When Patrick returned to the go-kart track she raced at as a kid, she was surprised to see that "30 to 40 percent" of the karters that day were girls.

But they struggle to make it to the top levels, at least in America.

Patrick and Johanna Long are the only two females racing in one of NASCAR's top two levels. Patrick on Sunday night will become the first woman since Janet Guthrie in 1976 to race in the Coca-Cola 600.

In IndyCar, where Sarah Fisher has become a mother and is now running her own race team, there are no active American women drivers. Sunday's field in the Indy 500 has three women, Katherine Legge, who is British, Simona de Silvestro from Switzerland and Brazilian Ana Beatriz.

Patrick speculates that the low numbers are based on a shallower talent pool, and there will be more women racers as the years go on.

"If it takes one out of a hundred guys to find a good one -- I'm just using a random number -- one out of hundred girls takes a hell of a lot longer than a guy," she said. "It just takes more time. I'm sure that there are all kinds of different genders and ethnicities out there trying racing. I think that in general as a culture in this country we are very open to new and different things. It is just going to take time."

Unstable ladder allegedly injures seaman - Seattle Maritime Attorneys

A seaman has sued his employer, in federal court, for injuries he allegedly sustained while working in unsafe conditions. Similar accidents, involving maintenance and cure, occur in major ports, throughout the nation such as Seattle, with some regularity. While unfortunate, maritime employers understand the inherent dangers and should do everything possible to safeguard their employees.

The seaman fell off an unstable ladder while working as a deckhand on a tugboat. While tying off two empty barges and a crane barge, he placed the stepladder against one of the barges. He fell off the ladder and crashed to the tugboat deck.

His lower back struck the deck and also a steel bit on the deck of the crane barge. The lawsuit he filed against the tugboat company alleges negligence for "failing to provide adequate equipment" on the craft. The suit also accuses the employer of failing to assign adequate personnel to complete the barge tie-off task, while ordering crew members to perform under unsafe conditions.

The defendants also face charges of failing to properly supervise personnel and a failure to train and supervise the crew, including the injured seaman. To complete the allegations, the seaman claims he was forced to work under unsafe conditions, leading to a personal injury.

The lawsuit seeks damages for physical pain and suffering, psychological pain and anguish, medical costs, lost wages, loss of earning capacity, disfigurement and disability, maintenance, cure, and interest, along with court and legal fees. Filed in U.S. District Court, it is currently unclear when the judge will hear motions and/or arguments from legal counsel.

Do you have any suggestions to reduce accidents and personal injuries of this type?

Egypt's Elections: Muslim Brotherhood claims exit-poll lead

While only a small number of ballots have been counted, Brotherhood leaders have said that there candidate is sure to advance to a run-off round.

By Hamza Hendawi and Maggie Michael,?The Associated Press / May 24, 2012

Egyptian men wait outside a polling center to cast their votes in Imbaba neighborhood in Giza, Egypt, Wednesday, May 23. More than 15 months since the uprising that pushed Hosni Mubarak from power, Egyptians streamed to polling stations Wednesday to freely choose a president for the first time in generations.

The Muslim Brotherhood quickly staked a claim Thursday for its candidate to advance to a runoff vote, saying its exit polls showed him leading in Egypt's landmark presidential election to succeed ousted leader Hosni Mubarak.

As vote-counting began, exit polls by several Arab television stations also suggested the Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi was ahead of the pack of 13 candidates. The reliability of the various exit surveys was not known, and a few hours after the end of two days of voting, only a tiny percentage of the ballots had been counted.

But the swiftness of the Brotherhood's claim showed its eagerness to plant its flag and establish in the public eye that Morsi had at least won entry into a second round vote. There are five prominent candidates, but none is expected to win outright in the first round. A run-off between the two leading contenders would be held June 16-17.

The first truly competitive presidential election in Egypt's history turned into a heated battle between Islamist candidates and secular figures rooted in Mubarak's old regime. The most polarizing figures in the race were Morsi and former air force commander and former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, a veteran of Mubarak's rule.

The Brotherhood is hoping for a presidential victory to seal its political domination of Egypt, which would be a dramatic turnaround from the decades it was repressed under Mubarak. It already holds nearly half of parliament after victories in elections late last year.

The group has promised a "renaissance" of Egypt, not only reforming Mubarak-era corruption and reviving decrepit infrastructure, but also bringing a greater degree of rule by Islamic law. That prospect has alarmed more moderate Muslims, secular Egyptians and the Christian minority, who all fear restrictions on civil rights and worry that the Brotherhood shows similar domineering tendencies as Mubarak.

"I think we are on the verge of a new era. We trusted God, we trusted in the people, we trusted in our party," prominent Brotherhood figure Essam el-Erian said at a news conference at which the group claimed its lead.

Morsi's campaign spokesman, Murad Mohammed Ali, cited exit polls conducted by Brotherhood campaign workers nationwide, though he declined to give percentages for Morsi's lead.

Regional television channels, citing their own exit polls, also placed Morsi as the top finisher, with a tussle for second place between Shafiq, moderate Islamist Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh and leftist Hamdeen Sabahi.

Across the country, election workers cracked open the transparent ballot boxes ? sealed by serial-numbered plastic bands to ensure they had not been tampered with ? and began working their way through the paper ballots. By 1 a.m. Friday, four hours after polls closed, results from about 5 percent of the 13,000 polling stations emerged, putting Morsi on top at 35 percent, followed by Shafiq with 22 percent and Abolfotoh with 16 percent.

Voter turnout appeared far lighter on Thursday than the opening day of balloting Wednesday. But those in line where still revved up on the fervor of choosing after decades of having no voice in deciding their leader.

"I like the personality of Shafiq. He is strong enough to lift the country," said Suheir Abdel-Mumin, one of several women standing in line waiting to vote in the Cairo district of el-Zawiya al-Hamra.

Somaiya Imam, still undecided on whom to choose, replied with a reference to Islamist candidates, saying: "Don't you think we should vote for the candidate who holds the Quran?"

"We voted for them before and they let us down," Abdel-Mumin responded, referring to the Brotherhood's victories in last year's parliamentary elections. "They want everything ? the presidency, parliament and government. They are never satisfied."

A woman standing behind the two joined in: "But he (Shafiq) is a Mubarak associate."

The Brotherhood faced a backlash from many of the voters who supported it in the parliament election but later grew disillusioned. Some accused it of trying to overly monopolize power and breaking earlier promises not to run for president. Others felt it simply had not produced any accomplishments with its parliament dominance ? though the ruling military has severely hampered the parliament.

Still, Morsi enjoyed the might of the Brotherhood's well-organized electoral machine, the nation's strongest.

"We need a president who gets rid of the former corrupt and oppressive system and brings Egypt back to the position it deserves economically and internationally," said Rizk Mohammed, a contractor voting with his family in Cairo ? all for Morsi. He defended the Brotherhood against claims it was trying to monopolize all power, saying pro-Mubarak media were fomenting that idea.

Also, the anti-Islamist vote was divided. Shafiq and former foreign minister Amr Moussa and Shafiq split the votes of many who craved a familiar face that could bring stability. Sabahi, as well as Abolfotoh, siphoned votes of those who could not bear to vote for a "feloul" ? or "remnant" of the old regime ? or a hard-core Islamist.

Moussa, who had been leading in many pre-election polls, appeared to have suffered the most.

During the day Thursday, he blasted Shafiq in an interview on Al-Arabiya television, accusing him of planning to bring back Mubarak's regime and demanding he quit the race.

"The Shafiq campaign is calling for the re-creation of the past and it will take the country back to the time before the revolution," Moussa said, looking rattled with his hair unkempt.

He also made a last-minute appearance to reporters outside his Cairo campaign headquarters with a plea for supporters to vote ? a suggestion his own exit polling showed him faltering.

"I call on all Egyptians, male and female, to go out in these last two hours and vote," he said.

Both Shafiq and the Brotherhood's Morsi have repeatedly spoken of the dangers, real or imaginary, of the other becoming president. Morsi has said there would be massive street protests if a "feloul" wins, arguing it could only be the result of rigging.

Shafiq, on his part, has said it would be "unacceptable" if an Islamist takes the presidential office, echoing the rhetoric of Mubarak, his longtime mentor who devoted much of his 29-year rule to fighting Islamists. Still, Shafiq's campaign has said it would accept the election's result.

Reports of voting violations seemed relatively limited. The Egyptian Association for Supporting Democratic Development reported fistfights between supporters of Morsi, Shafiq, Abolfotoh and Moussa, and some incidents of money being given to voters. It also reported some attempts to influence voters at the polls, including women wearing the all-covering veil campaigning for Morsi inside polling centers.

HTC One XL coming to Germany on Vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile

HTX One XL

The HTC One XL has graced the Far East, Australia and North America (under the name HTC One X), and now it's headed to Europe, with today's news that Vodafone Germany will launch the device next month. The One XL is almost identical to the international One X, except that it sports a 4G LTE radio and dual-core Snapdragon S4 chip instead of the Tegra 3 found in the One X. (That's due to Tegra 3's lack of support for LTE.)

Basically, this is an AT&T One X for Europe, with European LTE bands. In addition to dual-band HSPA on 900 and 2100MHz, the Euro One XL supports LTE on 800, 1800 and 2600MHz bands. This means it'll also run on the UK's 4G LTE networks, whenever they're launched.

The One XL will launch in Germany on Vodafone, T-Mobile and O2, and there'll also be unlocked SIM-free version available. Prices reportedly start at €659 (~$830).

Through the Draft EIS, the NPS is proposing a plan for managing helicopter and airplane flights over Grand Canyon. These flights currently carry more than 400,000 visitors above the canyon each year. Like all other uses in the park, air-tours play an important role in visitor enjoyment. But without better, more thoughtful management air-tour flights can interfere with the enjoyment of visitors on the ground. Air-tour flights also affect soundscape and other park resources of Grand Canyon?s 1,902 square miles..
