LONDON (MarketWatch) ? U.K.?s benchmark stock index climbed for a second straight day on Tuesday, as GKN PLC, Weir Group PLC and ITV PLC rose after well-received earnings reports, offsetting declines for Barclays PLC and BP PLC.
The FTSE 100 index /quotes/zigman/3173262 UK:UKX +0.27% ?gained 0.1% to 6,568.91.
Barclays raises billions in capital
Bowing to pressure from regulators, Barclays has announced plans to raise nearly ?5.8 billion in shares and ?2 billion in bonds to address a capital-ratio shortfall. News of the plans pushed the bank?s share price sharply lower.
Shares of GKN /quotes/zigman/287711 UK:GKN +6.66% ?jumped 5.6%, after the engineering group said it expects a stronger second-half performance driven by its Aerospace Engine Systems division. Additionally, first-half sales climbed 12%.
Another engineering firm, Weir Group /quotes/zigman/130249 UK:WEIR +3.56% ,?picked up 3.5%. The company delivered half-year results in line with its own expectations and said it remains on track to meet the full-year target.
Broadcaster ITV /quotes/zigman/337392 UK:ITV +4.71% ?rallied 5.3% after reporting a 15% rise in first-half adjusted earnings per share and saying the outlook looks positive for the rest of 2013.
Shares of Next PLC /quotes/zigman/312884 UK:NXT +2.10% ?put on 2.1% after the fashion retailer raised its pretax-profit guidance for the full year to a range of 635 million pounds ($937.9 million) to ?675 million, from its previous estimate of ?615 million to ?665 million.
Barclays shares drop on Tuesday after the bank announces plans to raise more capital.On a more downbeat note in London, Barclays /quotes/zigman/301787 UK:BARC -7.28% ? /quotes/zigman/152323/quotes/nls/bcs BCS -3.15% ?slumped 4% after the U.K. bank said it plans to issue 5.8 billion pounds ($8.9 billion) in new shares to address a capital shortfall. Additionally, the bank pushed back its target for return on equity, saying it would exceed cost of equity in 2016 rather than in 2015.
Other banks were also lower, with Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC /quotes/zigman/10330253 UK:RBS -2.15% ? /quotes/zigman/530544/quotes/nls/rbs RBS -1.67% ?down 2.2% and Lloyds Banking Group PLC /quotes/zigman/126322 UK:LLOY -1.57% ? /quotes/zigman/255656/quotes/nls/lyg LYG +0.24% ?off 1.8%.
Aberdeen Asset Management PLC /quotes/zigman/152853 UK:ADN -3.06% ?lost 4.5% after Morgan Stanley cut the investment firm to equal weight from overweight.
BP /quotes/zigman/210014 UK:BP -4.80% ? /quotes/zigman/247026/quotes/nls/bp BP -1.06% ?slid 3.7% after the oil giant said profit from operations slipped in the second quarter due to higher taxes and costs, and lower oil prices. Additionally, BP increased its estimate for the cost of a disputed claims-settlement process related to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Oil prices were also lower on Tuesday.
