A tour of the biker bars in Daytona | Resort ... - Travel & Leisure

Daytona Bikers

Daytona is a stunning area of Florida, and what better way to see it than on a Harley Davidson with some friends. I rode out for the day on a Glider that I?d hired. It is the only bike you can ride in Florida without being lynched. The bike is like an armchair. It even has a stereo.

We start the day riding to a bar called The Fox Head Lounge in Osteen. The word ?lounge? is used lightly in this case. It is easily interchanged with the word ?dive?.? It is 9.30am on a Sunday morning and there are already about 15 people drinking at the bar. The bar has been open since 8. That?s some serious dedication to drinking. We order Bloody Marys apart from me ? I have always felt there is something slightly wrong with drinking tomato juice, you might as well drink watered-down ketchup.

The next stop on the ride is a bar called The Cabbage Patch in Samsula. The Cabbage Patch is covered wall to wall with graffiti and is famous for ?Coleslaw Wrestling?. The bar is also adorned with hundreds of photos of women in various states of undress floundering around in a giant wrestling ring full of vegetable oil and cabbage. You can look it up on the internet. There may be booze involved.

There is a sign outside the back of the bar requesting ?No Colors? ? by this they mean the back patches that many of the bike gangs wear. Although written in small letters underneath is ?No Nigers?, incidentally spelt wrong. Such was the intelligence and prejudice level of the sign writer. The Cabbage Patch is the sort of bar where you have to be very careful what you say. One of my friends tells me there is a KKK community nearby. Needless to say, we didn?t stay long.

By lunchtime we were riding through the Daytona nature reserve known as The Loop. This was amazing, just like riding through a jungle. I kept expecting rattle snakes to fall down from the trees. As we rode, I saw the odd alligator wallowing around in the water by the side of the road. This definitely confirmed my suspicions that we shouldn?t get off the bike for lunch. Unless we were the lunch.

So instead we ate in a Marks Sports Bar overlooking Daytona beach. Delicious chicken wings and? clams. The weather is hot, absolutely roasting with 80% humidity. But I have discovered Mountain Dew, the drink of the gods, so all is well. And what a view of the beach!

Our last stop on the way home is The Last Resort Bar, a notorious place, famous for one of it?s rather dodgy patrons ? Aileen Wuornos, dubbed ?America?s first female serial killer?. Miss Aileen was a lesbian prostitute who knocked off 7 men during the between 1989 and 1990. She was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection in 2002. The bar is also an Outlaw bar, one of the most vicious motorcycle gangs in America. If walls had ears The Last Resort could tell many a horror story.

Outside the bar known as ?The Japanese Garden?. From it hangs the rusty corpses of Japanese motorbikes. I realise I should probably keep quiet about the 2 Yamahas in my garage back home.

My friends and I were the only patrons when we arrive, so we sit at the bar and order some beers After 6 hours on a bike in the Florida sunshine I am really looking forward to it. The barman goes by the name of ?Cannonball?. He is about 6?6 tall and at least as wide. He is wearing rings that were so big that when he took one off, you could drop a quarter through the hole. He regales us with tales of some his escapades in the Vietnam war. There are too many to write here but for more travel stories, try Blue Trips.

As an addendum to my review of this bar. I actually came down with heatstroke whilst I was there and ended up being looked after by Cannonball, who gave me a small air-conditioning unit from under the bar that he had been using. He told me ?Don?t worry, if you die, we?ll bury you out the back with the others?. We all chuckle awkwardly, full well knowing that he isn?t kidding. He keeps loaded guns behind the bar. After spending a couple of hours in the bar recovering, I?d also like to point out that if you ever find yourself in need of the loo at The Last Resort. Think twice about it. Rustic isn?t the word.

Customized Willys Jeep Wagon is the Region's New ?Automotive ...

DSC_0201What do you get when a ?gearhead? sales and marketing pro moves to the Truckee Meadows from the ?Motor City? to head up the Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority? A customized 1951 Willys Jeep four-wheel drive Station Wagon that will represent the region ? and promote the wide variety of attractions, festivals, activities and events available in the Reno/Sparks/North Lake Tahoe area ? to crowds at conventions, tradeshows and high profile events in Northern Nevada, California and further afield.

DSC_0140?Everybody loves checking out a classic car? especially one that is beautifully hand-lettered and pinstriped, upholstered in Pendleton Indian blanket material and topped off with a hand-made, aluminum roof rack system packed with everything from skis and snowshoes to a kayak, golf clubs, fishing rods and a slalom water ski,? according to Christopher Baum, President and CEO of the RSCVA and creator of the vehicle. ?It?s the perfect conversation starter to attract attention and help educate prospective visitors on the incredible diversity of things to do throughout Northern Nevada!?

Baum had great success designing and building a custom 1932 Ford hot rod powered by a new Chrysler hemi during his previous role as Senior Vice President of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau, and thought that a similar classic vehicle project ? carefully chosen to represent the region?s active, high desert lifestyle ? would be equally effective for Reno Tahoe USA.

?I found a partially restored 1951 four-wheel drive Willys station wagon on the Internet, that already had a modern Buick V-6 swapped in for more power, and liked the fact that ? although you seldom see one on the street anymore ? the classic Jeep front end makes it instantly identifiable to most people,? said Baum.

Baum had the wagon shipped to the RSCVA and then set out to find some of the best local hot rodders and artists to help make his vision a reality.

Said Baum, ?With the world-famous National Automobile Museum here, it shouldn?t be a surprise that the Reno area is full of automotive talent, and I was quickly able to assemble a team of wonderful partners.?

Local companies that came on-board to help build the RSCVA?s new promotional vehicle:

Lane Walker, Solo Signs ? Since the ?Washoe Willys? is actually a clever Marketing Program in disguise, the professional presentation of the RSCVA brand logo, URL and some appropriate slogans was a top priority.

?I wanted someone who was a master at old school pinstriping and hand lettering,? said Baum. ?And,? he added, ?I quickly found just that in Lane Walker of Solo Signs in Reno. He?s been in the business since 1977 and has had his own shop since 1990, so his artistic services are obviously in demand. And his talent with a brush is really unbelievable.?

Matt Villafuerte, Twisted Stitch Upholstery ? The Willys has two bench seats for the driver and passengers and Baum knew just what he wanted to do to make the car stand out with the crowds.

?I love Pendleton Indian blankets and had upholstered the Detroit hot rod with them to great effect,? said Baum. ?I found the perfect pattern for the Willys? color scheme on Pendleton?s website, ordered a bolt of fabric and then handed it to Matt, a talented guy who definitely knows his way around a heavy duty sewing machine. The wagon?s seats needed to be totally rebuilt before the heavy wool fabric went on, but Matt was definitely up to the task and the end result is fantastic.?

Jeff Robinson and Pete Gebhardt, Reno Speedworks ? Baum wanted to display sporting gear representative of the wide variety employed in our region, but he didn?t want to use a stock roof rack.

?I love Airstream trailers and got the idea of having a craftsman fabricate a roof rack system that looks like something that company might have sold back in the 1960s,? Baum continued, ?Since vintage stuff always looks cooler on display. A friend introduced me to Pete Gebhardt, and once I learned that he had spent 25 years pounding metal for Jack Roush, Ray Evernham and other top NASCAR team owners, we hired him. As a bonus, finding Pete introduced me to the rest of the gang at Reno Speedworks downtown, and their co-owner, Jeff Robinson, was able to change the Willys? gearing to something more street-able, fabricate a front license bracket and perform a myriad of other tasks to ready the car for its debut. Pete?s retro aluminum roof rack turned out fantastic and Jeff?s wrenching gives us the confidence to hit the open road? in a vehicle built when Eisenhower was still president!?

James Herr and Bob Scott, Summit Racing ? Sparks is fortunate to have a distribution center and retail store for one of the world?s foremost purveyors of high performance and custom automotive parts and accessories, and Summit?s support for the RSCVA?s new promo vehicle was immediate.

?James and Bob at Summit have been terrific, helping us choose appropriate wheels and tires for the Willys, as well as tracking down a custom air cleaner and valve covers for the offbeat Buick engine,? according to Baum. ?They?re proud to be located in our region and we are delighted to have them as a sponsor on this fun build.?

Special Events Coalition ? Although its individual contributions to the Washoe Willys were small (literally!), the members of this organization played an important role in giving the vehicle its unique personality: decals/stickers for most of the region?s festivals and special events ? from the Nugget Rib Cook Off to the Reno Air Races, Hot August Nights and Reno Rodeo ? cover the rear windows and slab sides of the aluminum roof rack, creating a colorful, and impressive, record of all there is to do and see in Reno/Sparks/North Lake Tahoe.

?Add the Nevada Museum of Art, UNR, Scheels, Reno Aces, Cabela?s and several other cool permanent attractions, and it?s hard to imagine a visitor whose passions wouldn?t be stirred by SOMETHING here!?, according to Baum.

DSC_0218The RSCVA?s new promotional vehicle is tentatively scheduled to make appearances, subject to commitments outside the Reno/Sparks/North Lake Tahoe region, at the following events: Reno-Tahoe Open, Hot August Nights, Toyota Silver State Showdown, Best in the West Nugget Rib Cookoff, The Great Reno Balloon Race, National Championship Air Races, Street Vibrations Fall Rally, Eldorado Great Italian Festival and the Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade.

Pharmaceutical Drugs are 62000 Times More Likely to Kill You than ...

By Dr. Mercola

According to the Council for Responsible Nutrition1, 69 percent of American adults take supplements. But are supplements dangerous? The UK-based, international campaign group, the Alliance for Natural Health International (ANH-Intl) recently revealed data2 showing that compared to supplements, an individual is:

  • Around 900 times more likely to die from food poisoning
  • Nearly 300,000 times more likely to die from a preventable medical injury during a UK hospital stay, which is comparable to the individual risk of dying that active military face in Iraq or Afghanistan

Additionally, the data shows that adverse reactions to pharmaceutical drugs are:

  • 62,000 times more likely to kill you than food supplements
  • 7,750 times more likely to kill you than herbal remedies

The data, which was collected from official sources in the UK and EU, demonstrate that both food supplements and herbal remedies are in the ?super-safe? category of individual risk ? meaning risk of death from their consumption is less than 1 in 10 million. The group has created an excellent graphic3 showing your relative risk of death from a variety of activities. Besides drugs and hospital injuries, you?re also more likely to die from being struck by lightning or drowning in your bathtub than having a lethal reaction to herbs or supplements?

According to the featured article on NewHope360.com4

?ANH-Intl executive and scientific director, Robert Verkerk PhD, hailed the figures as shedding new light on the vexed question of natural healthcare?s safety. ?These figures tell us not only what activities an individual is most or least likely to die from, but also what the relative risks of various activities are to society as a whole. It puts some real perspective on the actual risk of death posed by food supplements and herbal remedies at a time when governments are clamping down because they tell us they?re dangerous.

? According to Dr Verkerk, the new figures should help to pressure UK and European authorities to reduce regulatory burdens on natural health products.?

With a Super-Safe Track Record, Why are Supplements Under Attack?

Vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements have a tremendously safe track record, yet they are often singled out as being potentially dangerous by government agencies like the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This ? the notion that dietary supplements are unsafe ? was the premise behind the FDA?s Draft Guidance on New Dietary Ingredients (NDI), which would have required the supplement industry to prove the safety of natural ingredients that, in many cases, have been on the market and used safely for decades!

Fortunately, public outcry made the agency agree to take another look at their proposed guidance and to issue a revised draft.5 It?s still not known when the revisions might be completed.

The original NDI draft essentially claimed dietary supplements are unsafe and must be carefully tested in order to ?protect consumers.? The proposed safety thresholds even exceeded those required by pharmaceutical drugs ? despite extensive toxicological data showing supplements are FAR safer than drugs. As detailed above, drugs are 62,000 times more likely to kill you than supplements! ?Why on earth would supplements need more stringent safety thresholds than drugs?

It?s an obvious attempt to eliminate competition for the drug industry.

Data from the United States fully corroborates the featured UK data. For example, according to the latest data from the US National Poison Data System (2010 report)6, NO deaths were attributable to vitamin and mineral supplements that year. And, as noted by Orthomolecular Medicine News Service last year7, Americans easily take more than 60 billion doses of nutritional supplements every year, and with zero related deaths this is an outstanding safety record:

?Well over half of the U.S. population takes daily nutritional supplements. Even if each of those people took only one single tablet daily, that makes 165,000,000 individual doses per day, for a total of over 60 billion doses annually. Since many persons take far more than just one single vitamin or mineral tablet, actual consumption is considerably higher, and the safety of nutritional supplements is all the more remarkable. Over 60 billion doses of vitamin and mineral supplemnts per year in the USA, and not a single fatality. Not one. If vitamin and mineral supplements are allegedly so ?dangerous,? as the FDA and news media so often claim, then where are the bodies??

The Drug Industry is the Real Health Threat

In striking contrast, drugs are known to cause well over 125,000 deaths per year in the US when taken correctly as prescribed ? yet the FDA allows fast-track approvals and countless new additions of poorly tested drugs to the marketplace that must later be withdrawn due to their lethal consequences.

It is simply incomprehensible that any rational approach would seek to vilify supplements over drugs when the data in no way, shape or form supports it. The?most likely?motive for this position is financial greed that can put your life in jeopardy. According to the US National Poison Data System8 the following drug categories are among the most lethal:

  1. Analgesics, sedatives, hypnotics, and antipsychotics
  2. Cardiovascular drugs
  3. Opioids
  4. Acetaminophen combinations
  5. Antidepressants

Slightly lower down on the list you find drugs like muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs, hormones, antacids, anticoagulants, and antihistamines.

Time to Start a New ?Just say NO!? Anti-Drug Movement

The anti-drug slogan coined by Nancy Reagan in the early 1980?s is just as applicable for today?s prescription drug problem as the recreational drug problem of the past. The only difference is that today prescription drugs have eclipsed illicit drugs as the number one source of poisoning deaths. Prescription drugs have also been identified as the primary ?gateway? to illegal drug use, beating out marijuana, alcohol and cigarettes.

According to a July 6 press release9

?? Since 2000, the drugs sending people to their graves or to rehab have been shifting away from illicit drugs and toward prescription drugs. The 2011 report on the subject from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention made it clear: prescription narcotic pain reliever overdose deaths now exceed the number of deaths from heroin and cocaine combined.

? ?Our own clients and people calling in daily for information about our program or help have told us story after story about addictions starting with the use of prescription drugs,? stated Derry Hallmark, Director of Admissions at Narconon Arrowhead, a premier drug rehab facility in Southeastern Oklahoma. ?Sadly, prescription medications have become the newest of the gateway drugs. Sadder still are the losses of life and other severe consequences that go hand in hand with drug abuse, which is especially the case with prescription drug abuse.?

Hallmark adds that those addicted to prescriptions will often end up needing treatment or will even start taking illicit drugs. One of the most common examples of this is the connection between those addicted to painkillers that then start taking heroin??

It?s important to understand that there is a risk of side effects every time you take a prescription drug. No one (except for those who intentionally overdose) expects these medications to kill them, but they can do just that, and it happens far more often than you might think. In a 2011 report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA), officials emphasized that people should not assume there?s no risk in prescribed medicines10

The truth is, the best ?way to avoid all risk, including death, from prescription drugs is to not take them at all. Remember, it?s your body, not your doctor?s and not your pharmacist?s, so it is up to you to make the decision of what drugs to take, if any. Be SURE you are aware of the risks of any medication prescribed to you, and weigh them against any possible benefit. Then you can make a well-informed decision of whether it?s a risk you?re willing to take.

Optimizing Your Health Without Drugs

Of course, of paramount importance is taking control of your health so you can stay well naturally, without the use of drugs or even frequent conventional medical care. If you adhere to a healthy lifestyle, you most likely will never need medications in the first place.

This includes:

  1. Proper Food Choices

For a comprehensive guide on which foods to eat and which to avoid, see my nutrition plan. Generally speaking, you should be looking to focus your diet on whole, unprocessed foods (vegetables, meats, raw dairy, nuts, and so forth) that come from healthy, sustainable, local sources, such as a small organic farm not far from your home.

For the best nutrition and health benefits, you will want to eat a good portion of your food raw, and make sure you?re sourcing your meats and animal products from organically-raised, grass-fed or pastured animals.

Nearly as important as knowing which foods to eat more of is knowing which foods to avoid, and topping the list is fructose. Sugar, and fructose in particular, acts as a toxin in and of itself, and as such drive multiple disease processes in your body, not the least of which is insulin resistance, a major cause of accelerated aging.

  2. Comprehensive Exercise Program, including High-Intensity Exercise like Peak Fitness

Even if you?re eating the healthiest diet in the world, you still need to exercise to reach the highest levels of health, and you need to be exercising effectively, which means including not only core-strengthening exercises, strength training, and stretching but also high-intensity activities into your rotation. High-intensity interval-type training boosts human growth hormone (HGH) production, which is essential for optimal health, strength and vigor. I?ve discussed the importance of Peak Fitness for your health on numerous occasions, so for more information, please review this previous article.

  3. Stress Reduction and Positive Thinking

You cannot be optimally healthy if you avoid addressing the emotional component of your health and longevity, as your emotional state plays a role in nearly every physical disease ? from heart disease and depression, to arthritis and cancer. Effective coping mechanisms are a major longevity-promoting factor in part because stress has a direct impact on inflammation, which in turn underlies many of the chronic diseases that kill people prematurely every day. Energy psychology tools such as the Emotional Freedom Technique, meditation, prayer, social support and exercise are all viable options that can help you maintain emotional and mental equilibrium.

  4. Proper Sun Exposure to Optimize Vitamin D

We have long known that it is best to get your vitamin D from sun exposure, and if at all possible, I strongly urge you to make sure you?re getting out in the sun on a daily basis. There is preliminary evidence suggesting that oral vitamin D may not provide the identical benefits, although it?s still better than none at all. To determine the times of year that you can optimize your vitamin D levels through sun exposure, please see this previous article.

  5. Take High Quality Animal-Based Omega-3 Fats

Animal-based omega-3 found in krill oil helps fight and prevent heart disease, cancer, depression, Alzheimer?s, arthritis, diabetes, hyperactivity and many other diseases.

  6. Avoid as Many Chemicals, Toxins, and Pollutants as Possible

This includes tossing out your toxic household cleaners, soaps, personal hygiene products, air fresheners, bug sprays, lawn pesticides, and insecticides, just to name a few, and replacing them with non-toxic alternatives.

Emotional Support After Plastic Surgery | General health

Health and Fitness | General health | * Written by Ace Abbey | Wednesday, 25 July 2012 12:06 | Word Count: 561

Typically, if a patient considers the emotional aspects of plastic surgery, they focus on the renewed self-esteem and sense of confidence that they'll acquire as they enjoy their newly formed body. Many don't realize that adverse emotional reactions can set in also, especially immediately following the procedure. Your body is recovering from a major interruption to its daily functions. It was bombarded with anesthetic medications as well as other prescriptions which are designed to reduce pain and swelling. Also, your body won't look as you've envisioned it right away. You will probably be swollen and bruised, and your body needs time to settle down and recover before the full effects of your surgery can be seen. All of this physical turmoil can cause your emotions to go haywire, so what can you do to help yourself through this potentially difficult phase?

Develop Your Emotional Support System

Your spouse, family members, and friends can provide a strong support system. Simply talking about your feelings and anxieties with another adult (especially one who has already undergone plastic surgery), can be very calming. You'll be reassured that you're not alone!

Organize Your "Recovery Station" Before Surgery

Choose your favorite sofa or recliner and move an end table nearby. You'll want to pile the end table with your favorite books, magazines, snack foods, bottled water, the TV remote, and any other items you'd like to use as you relax. You'll probably want to be near the bathroom, since you'll be drinking plenty of water.

Follow Your Surgeon's Discharge Instructions

Your surgeon will send you home with prescriptions medications and instructions for caring for your incision site. Be sure that you follow the instructions to the letter: take your medication on a regular basis, change your bandage and clean the site when instructed, and avoid scratching or itching since extra contact with the site can cause infection.

Be Patient with Yourself as You Recover

Your body needs time to heal. It's been through a rigorous marathon in order to achieve your new look, and you want to give it all the time it needs to recover completely. Let your family and friends wait on you until you feel ready to get back up and about. Don't worry if it takes more time that you expected to regain your energy. You focus on resting until you feel up to getting back into your daily routine.

Eat Healthy, Nutritious Food

You may not feel like eating much in the first couple days after surgery. Plan to drink lots of water and eat light snacks as you are able. Soon, you'll feel hungry again. Your body needs the extra vitamins and minerals as it recovers, so choose snacks and light meals that are packed full of fresh fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates, and protein. Not only will this help your body to heal faster, but it will help you feel emotionally better too.

Call Your Doctor with Any Questions or Concerns

Whether you're experiencing physical or emotional symptoms related to your recovery from plastic surgery, contact your doctor with any concerns. He'll provide support and answers to set your mind at ease.
