Middle order batsmen Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli have taken India to a strong position at tea in their second test against New Zealand?in Bangalore today.
India sit on 168 for four, with Raina (51 not out) and Kohli (33 not out) restoring the hosts innings, which appeared to be in trouble after Doug Bracewell claimed two quick wickets following lunch.
Virender Sehwag (43) was the first to fall, caught by Daniel Flynn, before Bracewell took the big scalp of Sachin Tendulkar, superbly bowled, for just 17.
India sat on 80 for four, and, with New Zealand's seamers looking strong at the wicket, their middle order looked like it could be exposed.
Yet Raina and Kohli fought their way out of the hole, with Raina playing some particularly impressive shots.
Three consecutive fours off a Bracewell over were the pick of his strikes.
New Zealand missed their best chance to dismiss Raina when Jeetan Patel was ruled to have bowled a no-ball on what looked to be a certain Kruger van Wyk stumping.
Southee was the pick of the Black Caps bowlers, with two for 22 off 10 overs, while Bracewell, after being pillaged by Raina, had figures of two for 43 at tea.
Earlier in the day, the Black Caps collapsed to 365 in their first innings, losing their last four wickets for just 20 runs.
Along with Ross Taylor, who ended on 113 last night, Kiwi wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk played a big role in restoring the Black Caps innings yesterday, but fell early for 71.
Bracewell (43), who shared a 99-run seventh wicket partnership with van Wyk, followed soon after, as did Jeetan Patel (0), and Southee (14).
Indian spinner Pragyan Ohja ended with five for 99 off his 28.1 overs.
New Zealand has never beaten India in Bangalore in any form of the game, going back to their first encounter in the city in 1987.
